The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering the most critical time of the 2025 campaign as the team has just three games remaining in the regular season. Two of those games are contests within the AFC North. The Steelers are in first place in the division after beating the Baltimore Ravens in Week 14 and the Miami Dolphins in Week 15, but it is crucial the group keeps this hot streak alive and finds a way to clinch the division. One player that has come alive for the Steelers over the last two weeks has been wide receiver DK Metcalf. He has made several big plays while showing off his chemistry with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Metcalf had a big game on Monday Night Football against the Dolphins as the receiver hauled in three passes for 55 yards and a touchdown. Pittsburgh skated towards a win as the offense took over in the third quarter while the defense dominated Miami, and it was clear Pittsburgh was the better team. However, one of Pittsburgh's touchdown drives was kept alive by a questionable taunting call on Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks

It was third and eight for the Steelers in the fourth quarter, and Rodgers hit tight end Pat Freiermuth for a seven-yard gain. He was tackled by Brooks, who slightly stood over him. He was called for taunting which gave Pittsburgh a first down and extended the drive for the Steelers, Metcalf was asked his thoughts on that call during a recent appearance on The Christian Kuntz Podcast.

"I don't like what football is becoming," Metcalf said. "It's becoming soft, that's all I'm going to say. I know they fine folks for saying too much."

The call helped the Steelers out as it would have been fourth down for Pittsburgh had there been no penalty on the play. The taunting call gave the Steelers a first down on a drive that they wound up scoring a touchdown on to extend their lead to 28-3. Despite the fact that the call benefitted the offense, Metcalf still didn't like it as it showed how soft the league is getting.

The moment helped the Steelers out, but it was a questionable decision to throw a flag for something that seemed so innocent and didn't cause any harm. Even Troy Aikman, who was in the booth broadcasting the game, could not stop himself from blaming the league and the officiating.

It is fair to say that the game was already out of hand as the fourth quarter had already begun and the Steelers held a 21-3 lead, but still, it is discouraging to see calls like that being made. Brooks posed and looked at Freiermuth for a second, and the flag flew. Players should be allowed to play with some emotion, even against the Steelers. Also during the broadcast however, it was mentioned that the referees have been encouraged to get more strict with these types of situations.

Steelers' DK Metcalf Hates New NFL Rules

Metcalf continued to talk about the way the NFL officiates the game, and he also spoke about fines he has received in the past. He said he was once fined for pancaking a player in the secondary on the backside of a run play. The league told him the player he blocked was away from the play, but Metcalf argues that anything can happen on the field. The ballcarrier could get back across the field and reverse course, or that member of the secondary could take off running, taking a good angle on the ballcarrier down the opposite sideline.

Many believe the league is getting soft, and there has to be a way to fix some of these rules. Wide receivers can't be unwilling to block because they are scared of getting fined.
