The Pittsburgh Steelers have some steam heading into the playoffs after taking down the Baltimore Ravens in Week 18 to win the AFC North and clinch a spot in the postseason. There is some hope that Pittsburgh can make some noise in the playoffs as the team is led by four-time league MVP, Aaron Rodgers, while the defense has been playing well for the most part down the stretch. Pittsburgh has a winnable game against the Houston Texans on Monday night, and if the Steelers can find a way to secure the victory, it will be the team's first time advancing in the playoffs in nearly a decade.

One thing the Steelers do have that not a lot of teams do are established veterans to rally behind. Players like Rodgers, Cam Heyward, and TJ Watt are important to the organization and have earned a ton of respect from the younger guys on the roster. Those younger players are going to want to win and make plays for them, which could lead to a great run by this team in the postseason. There could also be some rumors about retirements fueling Pittsburgh. Rodgers is an obvious retirement candidate, but according to team insider Mark Kaboly, fans should be keeping an eye on Heyward as well.

Kaboly has spoken to both Cam and Connor Heyward, and neither has said that Cam plans to retire, but there have been some signs that the defensive captain could be thinking about it. Connor spoke with Kaboly about Cam's inspired speech before Pittsburgh's game against Baltimore.

"His speech touched everybody," Connor said. "When I was hearing the speech, I was thinking, I don’t want this to be the last one. I am not saying he’s going to retire, but he’s older, and the reality is that you don’t know how many more of these he’s going to get. Not this year, but I am glad that we have one more."

This was said after the win over the Ravens that Cam gave an inspired speech in the locker room, and some players cited that speech as something that fueled them going into the contest. That could mean Cam has mentioned something about potentially retiring, or it could have just been the defensive captain firing his team up.

Steelers' Cam Heyward celebrates with quarterback Aaron Rodgers after beating the Ravens at home in the 2025 regular season finale.

Cam is under contract through the 2026 season, and there hasn't been much chatter about the older defender potentially hanging it up after the 2025 season. Maybe that is because fans have been more focused on the future of Rodgers, but it was kind of always assumed that Cam would at least play out the remainder of his contract -- especially since he partially held-out some over the last two offseasons to try to get more money.

Kaboly wrote more about the possibility of Cam retiring.

"Read what you want into it, but it is something that motivated the team enough to eke out a win over the Ravens, and it is something that can definitely propel a team that’s, maybe, the worst team in the AFC playoffs, to an unexpected playoff run," Kaboly wrote. "We’ve seen it before with eventual Hall of Fame players like Peyton Manning, Ray Lewis, and Michael Strahan, so why not Heyward?"

The players mentioned by Kaboly all won a Super Bowl during their final season in the league, and the news of their retirements may not have been public, but it was known by some teammates. That could propel a team to play better, and it could rally an organization to go on a run.

Steelers' Cam Heyward Needs Postseason Success

Cam has been one of the best and more underrated interior defensive linemen in the league throughout the majority of his career. He is only missing one thing, and that is postseason success. He has been a part of three postseason wins since entering the NFL, and one last run at a Lombardi Trophy could change the way the national media looks at his career.
