The Pittsburgh Steelers have a long and storied history. Six Super Bowl championships alone speak volumes about what the organization has been able to accomplish over the years. Adding onto those accomplishments are the facts that the team has dozens of Pro Football Hall of Fame members, as well as one of the more well-respected ownership families in all of sports. While playoff success has not been present lately, there is a standard in the Steel City that will likely never waver. That is something that all fans continue to be proud of, even if it has been almost two decades since a Lombardi Trophy was hoisted.

Because of how many stars have played in the black and gold, sometimes certain individuals are forgotten because of the talent that was present on the rosters during championship years. If a player isn't in the Hall of Fame, many casual NFL fans may not know his name, but Steelers fans tend to remember the greats, even if they haven't received the top honor.

This is the case for LC Greenwood, a legendary defensive end who made six Pro Bowls and appeared on two All-Pro teams. He was a member of the dominant Steel Curtain defenses in the 1970s, and won four Super Bowls. Despite these incredible feats, he has never received the the honor of being inducted into the league's Pro Football Hall of Fame.

That could soon change, as Greenwood is one of the finalists in the seniors category. Essentially, Greenwood is competing for anywhere between one to three spots with Bill Belichick, Robert Kraft, Ken Anderson and Roger Craig. Diving a little deeper into the process, veteran NFL reporter explained why Greenwood's group is different that the modern-era finalists, as drama swirled on social media after the report that Belichick will not be getting in.

"I'm a HOF voter who saw Belichick as slam-dunk," Sando wrote. "I don't know anything about voting results, but if this is true, and we'll find out officially next week, the question is, how could this happen? Before I list possibilities, understand this: Belichick, Kraft, Craig, Anderson & Greenwood are competing for 1-3 spots, separate from the 15 modern-era finalists."

Greenwood passed away over 12 years ago, but that doesn't change the fact that he deserves to be recognized in the Hall of Fame. If the committee does end up voting to induct three of the five aforementioned candidates, and reports are correct about Belichick being snubbed, Greenwood could end up getting in over the legendary coach.

The alleged move to leave Belichick out of the Hall of Fame has sparked widespread backlash. Despite the incredible careers of the other four individuals involved in this category, no one has a better case to receive the honor over Belichick. That's why, whoever does get in, will have a small asterisk because of the apparent political nature of certain voters' decisions.

Long-time Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts General Manager Bill Polian is receiving a lot of heat for the report that surfaced on Tuesday evening. Many believe that he could have led a charge convincing others to keep Belichick out, but he has since refuted that.

Steelers Fans Know Greenwood Belongs In The Hall Of Fame

Even if Greenwood gets in during a year when there is plenty of controversy, he should have been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame a long time ago. The fact that Belichick may be left out, and millions are enraged by that, shouldn't take away from the legendary career of Greenwood if he was voted in. Fans will know in the coming days, and those in the Steel City understand that Greenwood deserves a bust in Canton.
