The Pittsburgh Steelers are continuing to finalize the rest of the coaching staff under new head coach Mike McCarthy, and along with filling out the staff, the attention will soon need to turn to the players. Many roster members will ultimately leave the Steelers in the free agency period, but others will inevitably join the team, some potentially due to McCarthy or the staff's influence. Other players, however, will ultimately become trade targets for other teams, with the Steelers likely taking a look at players who could be traded. One of those intriguing options, especially in the Steelers' case, has had a potential price tag revealed.

Early Wednesday evening, CBS Sports writer Tyler Sullivan listed out some of his potential trade candidates that could be sent to new teams. One of these trade candidates happens to be one of the players that has been linked to the Steelers for quite some time, with McCarthy himself making comments about how much he loves this particular player in previously made comments in the past.
"[Kyler] Murray's situation will need to come to a head before March 15th (the fifth day of the 2026 league year), as that's when his $19.7 million base salary for 2027 becomes fully guaranteed," Sullivan wrote. "With that in mind, this potential trade could come together early in the offseason. Another factor that could drive a Murray trade is that the quarterback class at the 2026 NFL Draft isn't particularly strong, so teams may be more inclined to target a veteran like Murray."
Sullivan would go on to reveal that the potential cost for Kyler Murray would be a second-round pick, and lists the Steelers as one of many potential teams who could be interested in trading for Murray. This move would be a step in the right direction for the Steelers to take regarding the quarterback position, as the current status of the position is unknown. Whether or not Cardinals General Manager Monti Ossenfort would be willing to trade Murray anywhere is something that will only be revealed as the offseason goes on, but if the Steelers want to take a swing at acquiring him, it seems as if a second-round pick might be all it takes to get the job done.

Murray joining the Steelers would be a fairly intriguing option for the team to take a look at, seeing as a lot of the reason Murray's time with the Arizona Cardinals may be done is due to his poor performance during the 2025 NFL season. Before his season was unfortunately cut short due to a foot injury in Week 5, Murray's performances were not something that helped the Cardinals win games overall, despite two solid performances early on. Even though Murray wasn't performing the best in the regular season, the Steelers' front office could believe that Murray could potentially recapture some of the magic that he had during the 2020 NFL season, and at the price of a single second-round pick, it seems like the Steelers might consider making this trade work.
Should the Steelers acquire Murray from the Cardinals, he'd immediately join a new system unlike anything the Steelers have had in the past, and as the new coaching staff fills out and the players join and leave the team, certain factors will have to be ensured.
Steelers Need To Give Murray The Best Chance To Succeed
Should the Steelers find a way to acquire Murray and make him the starting quarterback, the team's approach on offense will need to drastically change. They'll need to give him the best chance to succeed, and that means shoring up the offensive line to protect him should be the absolute priority. On top of that, the Steelers need to find Murray a second reliable option at wide receiver, giving him a plethora of weapons to throw to.
