Former Steelers Receiver Absolutely Wants To Play With Aaron Rodgers: "I Might Come Out Of Retirement."

The Pittsburgh Steelers had an intriguing wide receiver room in 2025. After trading for DK Metcalf, the team leaned on various other options for production outside of Metcalf; though, results were largely disappointing. One surprising addition during the season was veteran Adam Thielen, who saw significant playing time almost immediately after being claimed off waivers in December. Thielen announced his retirement shortly after the 2025 season, but recent comments suggest his NFL future may still be undecided.

Thielen’s role in the Steelers offense was limited, yet the connection between him and Aaron Rodgers quickly became evident. While he finished his Steelers stint with just 11 catches for 117 yards, his impact went far beyond the stat sheet.

Rodgers frequently praised Thielen for his veteran leadership, professionalism, and the accountability he brought to the locker room. Even in a short span of time, Thielen’s presence helped mentor younger receivers and set a standard for preparation and work ethic, leaving a lasting impression on the team despite his modest on-field numbers.

It didn't come as a surprise to many when Thielen announced his retirement in January, as Thielen simply wasn't the receiver he once was with the Minnesota Vikings (the first stint). Thielen never quite saw the snaps or production as he once did when playing for his hometown team, which ultimately led to his decision to hang it up. Many fans, though, were curious about whether Thielen might reconsider, especially given how much he clearly enjoyed competing and contributing when he was on the field.

While speaking with NFL Network's Brian Baldinger during their live Super Bowl coverage, Thielen explained his decision to step away.

"I think at this point of your career, when you have to take a backseat. You're not playing quite as much, you're not an every-down guy, it was pretty clear to me it's time to be done," Thielen said. "Honestly, what makes it a difficult decision, I feel good. I know I could still do it physically and mentally."

Even though he recognized that he was no longer an every-down option, Thielen made it clear that physically and mentally, he still felt capable of competing at a high level.

Thielen proved in 2025 that he still has the skills to compete in the NFL. While he wasn’t blazing past defenders or making highlight-reel circus catches, he consistently served as a dependable target over the middle for Rodgers.

His ability to secure contested throws and convert tough catches under pressure highlighted his experience and football IQ. Beyond just the numbers, Thielen’s presence offered stability in a wide receiver room that often struggled for consistency, proving that even in a smaller role, he could make a meaningful impact on the field.

There is no question that Thielen knows he can still play, and you can hear in his voice that he still wants to play. While making a guest appearance on Pardon My Take, Thielen kept that door open, if it meant he could play again with the 42-year-old Rodgers.

“I think my wife hopes [Rodgers] retires because if he doesn’t I might come out of retirement," Thielen said.

It’s a story with two sides for Thielen. On one hand, he felt it was the right moment to step away from the game, yet the idea of catching passes from the four-time MVP again makes the thought of returning to the field tempting.

Reports indicate that the chances of Rodgers coming back to Pittsburgh for 2026 are growing. If he does return, all eyes will be on Thielen to see whether he follows through on his comments. A reunion with Rodgers could be one last chapter in Thielen’s career, and it would give fans a chance to see him contribute in meaningful ways once again.

Steelers Could Have Thielen Mentor Rookie Wide Receiver

Looking ahead to this year’s draft, it seems likely that Pittsburgh will use one of their early picks to add a wide receiver to the roster. The Steelers have a clear need at the position, and bringing in a young, talented pass-catcher in a talent draft class could help inject depth into a room that has struggled for consistency in recent seasons.

Thielen could play a pivotal role in helping a rookie wide receiver adjust to the NFL. Having a seasoned mentor like Thielen in the locker room could accelerate a rookie’s development and help them contribute sooner rather than later, giving the Steelers an immediate boost at a position that has long needed stability.
