The Pittsburgh Steelers made a bold move hiring former Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Domata Peko as their new defensive line coach. Peko, who spent 15 seasons in the NFL, including 11 with the rival Bengals, knows almost more than anyone the standard the Steelers set for themselves. After all, Peko played against some of the best Steelers teams during the Mike Tomlin era. These teams were rough, tough, and physical, and Peko was in the trenches against them at least twice a year for over a decade. Now, Peko will go from long-time rival, to Steelers coach, despite his limited coaching experience.

Despite the Steelers and Tomlin parting ways, they will still utilize the same 3-4 defensive scheme under new head coach Mike McCarthy. This scheme allows players such as game-wrecking outside linebacker and pass rusher TJ Watt, to often line up on the defensive line.
While Watt will spend most of his time coached by the Steelers' outside linebackers coach, the defensive line coach is also super important for Watt, given the 3-4 defense. Peko, a recent former player, could be the spark plug this defense and coaching staff needs.
Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo was recently on 93.7 The Fan on Wednesday and shared his thoughts on the hiring of Peko.
"He doesn't have a ton of experience, but defensive line is one position if you played the game and you're a good communicator, you can hop into the NFL coaching world without any big issues," Fittipaldo stated.
Peko has had limited experience as an NFL coach as mentioned. After his 15-year playing career, Peko spent the 2024 season as a defensive assistant with the Dallas Cowboys and the following season as Colorado's defensive line coach under Head Coach Deion Sanders.
Going from defensive assistant to defensive line coach is one thing, but doing so at the NFL level is another story. However, for Coach McCarthy, the message is clear. Have a diverse group of voices on this Steelers coaching staff from different eras to provide varied perspectives that players can each draw on.

Perhaps the most notable aspect of Peko's career was his durability. The best ability is availability, and in Peko's first 13 seasons in the NFL, he played in every game in 11 of those seasons, a staggering number, especially in the physical era that Peko played in. Peko was a stalwart on the defensive line, a prominent run stuffer that offenses had to gameplan around, especially during Peko's time with the Bengals. Peko brings a unique, positive energy that should be contagious in the Steelers' locker room.
Steelers' New DL Coach Peko Could Be A Game-Changing Mentor To The Next Generation
The Steelers' defensive line will look to anchor this veteran-laden defense under McCarthy, and last year's first-round pick, defensive linemen Derrick Harmon, will look to set the tone under Peko. Peko can draw on much from his 15-year NFL career and provide Harmon with invaluable knowledge to build on. Harman already had an impressive rookie season, and you could feel his presence on the field, as opposed to when he was off of it. Harmon will likely only get better. The first-round pick is just scratching the surface of his potential, and it will be up to Peko to get the best out of him.

The 2026 Steelers will be under a new identity under coach McCarthy, and if the Peko hire is any indication, McCarthy is not afraid to be bold in his hirings.
