The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the more interesting teams to keep an eye on during the 2026 offseason. The organization is under new leadership at head coach for the first time in 19 seasons, and it will be interesting to see how that plays a role on roster construction and any other moves. Mike McCarthy is an offensive-minded head coach, which is something that franchise has not had in over 50 seasons. There will likely be an emphasis placed on that side of the football, and that is going to start with finding the right quarterback to start for Pittsburgh in 2026.

Aaron Rodgers is the front-runner to be the starting quarterback in Pittsburgh for the 2026 season. The veteran is still making a decision on whether or not he wants to continue his playing career, but most reports have pointed towards him coming back. If he returns, he is expected to sign with Pittsburgh, while playing for another team like the Minnesota Vikings could also be a possibility. Rodgers returning would likely be best for Pittsburgh, because if he doesn't, the franchise would need to figure the position out in a hurry.
Beat writer Ray Fittipaldo joined 93.7 The Fan on Wednesday morning, and he was asked about General Manager Omar Khan's comments on second-year quarterback Will Howard. The executive spoke about the young quarterback making progress in practice, which Fittipaldo touched on.
"I think they like him, they want to develop him," Fittipaldo said. "I mean it's impossible to know about a quarterback when you don't see him in games. The Steelers didn't even get a chance to see him in preseason games. Omar was asked yesterday, because I think it was mentioned that they really like his practice tape, 'What did you see on that tape that got you excited?' Basically, he said the speed of the game is not going to affect Will Howard. I'm paraphrasing there, but he was very confident. If a quarterback guru like Mike McCarthy can see that, I think that's really good news."
Khan was the one that made the comment about Howard being good in practice and the speed of the game not being an issue, but that is likely something he has discussed with McCarthy. McCarthy has a history of developing elite quarterbacks, so knowing that he shares this same sentiment should get fans a little bit excited about the potential of Howard.

Howard starting in 2026 still seems like a longshot, but at least fans now know that the organization is truly excited about the young signal-caller. It seems likely that Rodgers will come back to be the starter in 2026 as mentioned, but that could also be a good thing for Howard. Pittsburgh will obviously be switching offenses during the offseason after McCarthy has come in to call the plays and lead the team, but it is a system Rodgers is familiar with due to the time the two spent together with the Green Bay Packers. Another year under Rodgers will allow Howard to develop overall, and he can familiarize himself with a new offense with help from a seasoned professional in McCarthy's system.

Steelers' Will Howard Has All The Tools To Succeed
There has been a lot of hype surrounding Howard ever since he was drafted during the 2025 offseason. It is important to remember that he is a sixth-round pick, so the expectations should not be too high, but it is hard not to get excited about the quarterback. He has a winning background, the size, and the mobility to be a successful quarterback in the NFL. It is all going to come down to his play, which fans in Pittsburgh are anxious to see.
