The Pittsburgh Steelers have a lot of issues to address on the roster as the free agency period gets closer on March 11th. They'll be able to make the moves they need to make to acquire key players to bolster certain positions on both sides of the ball. The Steelers will hopefully be able to retain key contributors from the 2025 NFL season as well, with a good number of them being free agents this season.

The Steelers are in great shape with regards to the salary cap this season, which will ultimately give them some flexibility in determining who they can sign or not. And it seems that Steelers General Manager Omar Khan might be willing to do whatever it takes to go out and acquire some key players on offense this season, no matter the cost.

Earlier on Wednesday afternoon, Mark Kaboly published an article where he discussed some of Khan's comments made at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine on a wide variety of issues the Steelers face. One of the more interesting comments he made is regarding how he believes that Khan is going to do whatever he has to do to acquire another key piece on offense.

"Out of the box is the new normal for Khan," Kaboly wrote. "I view this as, 'We are going to go out and acquire a WR2 in free agency or a trade, no matter what.'"

This is an interesting comment to make, considering that one of the major needs the organization has is a second wide receiver behind DK Metcalf. No matter who the Steelers decide to name the starting quarterback for 2026, it's imperative that the team builds around them, and this starts by getting valuable depth at the wide receiver position. The Steelers could end up getting new receivers through free agency or the draft, especially with how they seem to like certain wide receiver prospects, and this will end up going a long way to ensuring the team remain competitive.

One of the major reasons the team was unable to maintain a competitive edge in 2025 was because of an inconsistent offense. In the games that Metcalf couldn't get going, the Steelers ended up slowing down offensively, becoming one-dimensional, and stalled out as the opposing defense figured out who to stop. Getting wide receiver depth behind Metcalf is one of the most critical pieces the Steelers need to address in the offseason, and it seems as if Khan is going to address wide receiver depth at all costs.

There are plenty of options that the franchise has if they want to remain competitive heading into the 2026 season, but with all the questions looming around the team, one of the major ones will be determining exactly who to acquire. If Khan is serious about ensuring the right player arrives to the Steelers at all costs, then hopefully the front office will be able to make the right decision on the right player, getting them here no matter what it may cost them upfront.

With how much change has struck the Steelers this offseason, it's imperative that no matter who they bring in on the offensive side of the ball, that they retain their most valuable pieces.

Steelers Need To Ensure Their Offensive Woes Are Fixed

No matter what the Steelers decide to do with their in-house players, Khan needs to ensure that Kaboly's comments are proven correct. Should they go out and acquire a proven star in free agency, or make a blockbuster trade to get a top wide receiver prospect, the Steelers have to fix the offense. If they can make this happen, the franchise should remain in contention to win, and repeat as AFC North champions.
