The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a lot of noise during the 2026 offseason as the organization has brought in almost an entirely new coaching staff, as well as some new additions to the roster. Pittsburgh has made some necessary additions through free agency and via trade. This is a tough time of year for teams around the league as organizations have to decide on their own pending free agents. Franchises typically try to re-sign the players they want to stick around before free agency begins, but a lot of the time players want to test their market in free agency to see what they could earn.

One player that was on Pittsburgh's roster in 2025 that was scheduled to become a free agent during the 2026 offseason was tight end Connor Heyward. He was drafted by the team back in 2022, and the two sides did not agree on a new deal. He wound up signing a two-year deal worth just under $5 million with the Las Vegas Raiders. His older brother, Cam Heyward, spoke about his brother signing elsewhere during the most recent episode of Not Just Football. Cam was happy and supportive of his little brother, but he also had a message for fans in Pittsburgh that did not always treat Connor right.
"For all the people who will not get a chance to keep talking about him, and who have went out of their way to do some very inappropriate stuff, bring that sh*t onto me, because I'll handle it," Cam said. "I'll expose you if you want to go down that route. Connor is very forgiving and like Connor has always tried to keep it professional to an extent. I'm on my way out of this thing. I'll handle it the right way. I've told people to quit talking about my little brother, but I'll handle it from here on out. I'll leave it at that."
Connor was on the receiving end of a lot of negativity from the fan base in Pittsburgh over the last couple of years, and none of it was really for anything that happened on the field. He caught some strays while Cam was going through some sticky contract situations before each of the last two seasons, which had nothing to do with Connor.

Connor did not deserve any of the backlash he got from the fan base while he was in Pittsburgh. A lot of it came from the idea that he only got drafted by the organization because he was Cam's little brother, but that idea is utterly ridiculous. NFL franchises do not deal in nepotism when it comes to the roster. It might be present in front offices, but not with the personnel that takes the field. Cam continued to speak on his brother leaving Pittsburgh.
"I take wearing the Black and Gold very seriously," Cam said. "When you disrespect not only my little brother, and you start to disrespect what we do on the field and what we do for the community, I got a lot to say with that."
Connor coming back to Pittsburgh always seemed like a longshot, even though he would fit in great with Mike McCarthy's offense. McCarthy typically rosters a fullback, and Connor could have filled that role while continuing to be an ace on special teams.

Steelers Fans Should Be Appreciative Of Connor Heyward
Connor was never valued by the fan base in Pittsburgh like he should have been, which is probably a reason he chose to sign elsewhere. He was a great special teams player, and he also made plays on offense when he needed to. He caught 44 passes for 379 yards and three touchdowns during his time with the Steelers, and he also added on two rushing touchdowns. He was the ballcarrier in Pittsburgh's version of the "Tush Push" during the 2025 season, which was a successful play for the offense down the stretch. He also was used a fullback from time to time, and he excelled in that role.
What do you think of Cam's comments directed at the fan base? Let me know on X, @brogannoey!
