The Pittsburgh Steelers are dominating headlines for the second offseason in a row due to an ongoing saga with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The quarterback is making a decision on whether or not he wants to retire, and the entire fan base in Pittsburgh is desperate to find out what he wants to do. He has reportedly had consistent communication with the organization and new head coach Mike McCarthy, and that can be seen as a sign that he might be returning to the Steelers. However, it is important to remember that the two are close from their time with the Green Bay Packers, so anything can happen.

Rodgers is a very secretive person at this stage of his career, and it is always going to be hard to get a read on what he is thinking. It is hard to trust anything that is reported about the quarterback as he keeps his circle tight, and all of the big-time reporters and insiders do not have a direct way to get to him to find things out. It remains a mystery when it comes to what he plans to do for the 2026 season, but the way his former head coach has been speaking makes it seem like he is preparing for Rodgers to be under center in 2026.

McCarthy was asked about quarterback Will Howard during his time with the media on Tuesday, and he may have accidentally let it slip that Rodgers will be back in Pittsburgh. He was speaking about where Howard can improve, and he mentioned that he has the best player to ever do it teaching him.

"You can talk about some things throwing the ball; I think there's a lot of growth with his feet," McCarthy said. "The challenge I see in college football, it's so scheme-heavy. They're running these quarterbacks, their schemes are diverse. There's not a lot of training in the footwork. So throwing the ball, and you got the best guy that's probably ever done it in Aaron Rodgers, I mean you look at the way Aaron throws, just watch his feet. Watch the ground-force explosion going through his feet, through his hips, into his throwing motion. My point is there's room for development there."

McCarthy did not directly say that Rodgers would be coming back, but it certainly sounded like he was insinuating that Howard would be developing under Rodgers for another season.

McCarthy made this comment just a day after he went on The Pat McAfee Show and announced that he has had consistent communication with Rodgers, while also making it known that Rodgers has been talking with other coaches on the staff. The veteran quarterback is familiar with most of the coaches that are now in Pittsburgh, so he could just be catching up with some old buddies, or the two sides could be discussing what they want out of the offense and other sorts of schematics.

Steelers Have Given Aaron Rodgers A Reason To Come Back

Rodgers played well enough during the 2025 season to earn the right to start another year. One of the bigger questions going into the 2026 offseason was going to be whether or not he wanted to return to Pittsburgh due to the sheer lack of weapons that the organization has in the passing game, but that weakness has already been addressed. Pittsburgh acquired Michael Pittman Jr. via trade and signed running back Rico Dowdle. Another wide receiver addition or two is also expected in the 2026 NFL Draft.

The four-time league MVP should have enough talent around him to return to Pittsburgh, and the results could be even better this time around with the Steelers.
