Is Mike McCarthy The Man To Take The Steelers To The Promised Land?

As we speed toward the 2026 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers have plenty of needs, including at the safety, wide receiver, and interior offensive line positions. Quarterback is arguably their biggest question mark, though it’s unlikely they will use a first-round draft pick to attempt to address that, at least not this year.

Pittsburgh is preparing to host the NFL Draft in 2026 at the end of April.

The most substantial shakeup is not on the field, though, but on the sideline, as Mike McCarthy will be holding the clipboard Week 1 and not Mike Tomlin, who has held down that position for the past 19 seasons. Can McCarthy finally get the Steelers back to where they want to be? Or can we expect more of the same in the Steel City when the playoffs roll around in January of 2027?

A “Safe” Choice

According to Casinos.com, which ranks the top US online casinos, virtually every credible sportsbook currently has the Steelers as a distant third to win their division, behind the Ravens and Bengals, let alone a Super Bowl. This is not necessarily an indictment of McCarthy, who many viewed as the “safe” choice once it became clear that Tomlin was departing. After all, McCarthy is a hometown boy, having grown up in Greenfield, a scant five miles away from Acrisure Stadium.

McCarthy also knows how to coach teams with rabid fanbases, as he is a veteran of the pressure cookers that are Dallas and Green Bay, respectively. It’s evident that team ownership thought he could be a steady hand at the helm, though his recent lack of success in Dallas might give some fans pause.

A More Offensive-Minded Coach

What’s more, McCarthy has always been seen as both a more offensive-minded coach and a quarterback whisperer, which appeals to some fans who felt Tomlin had lost the locker room in recent years, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Regardless of who is under center for the Steelers come Week One, with McCarthy as their guiding light, they should have expert guidance, as he brings with him nearly 20 years of NFL head coaching experience.

If the team pairs the newly acquired Michael Pittman Jr. with DK Metcalf and has even a middle-of-the-pack running game, it’s logical to believe they should put up some points, even if all they do is slap a Band-Aid on their quarterback needs this offseason. However, the more impatient segments of the fanbase don’t want to see their squad merely make the playoffs or even win their division. They want the team to get past Wild Card weekend at a minimum, something they’ve been unable to accomplish since 2016. To Steeler fans who expect to hang a banner every year, that’s an eternity.

Is This the Year McCarthy Leads the Steelers Back to the Super Bowl?

There were a ton of Steeler fans who lost their voices vociferously booing Tomlin and their own team for the past couple of years, especially when they were being resoundingly beaten during Wild Card weekend. The “Fire Tomlin” chants rang out loud enough to be heard throughout the Steel City’s entire downtown area.

It seemed as though Tomlin couldn’t wait to get out of Dodge as soon as the Steelers concluded their 2025-26 campaign with a sound drubbing by the Texans. Clearly, he felt it was time for a change, just like the fans did.

The argument could be made, though, that it doesn’t matter who’s coaching the team unless the Steelers finally get their hands on a franchise quarterback. Any Steelers fan who doesn’t realize that doesn’t understand the fundamentals of the game.

It’s illogical to think that the team will make it back to the Super Bowl, at least not this coming year. Though they don’t like to hear it, the fans will need to be patient with McCarthy, and so will team ownership.

Championship prominence is likely at least two or three years away, and that’s being optimistic. Ultimately, it’s all going to come down to landing a franchise quarterback, recreating the formidable Steel Curtain defense of years past, and the squad gelling together and wholeheartedly buying into what their new coach is selling.
