Entering the 2026 NFL Draft, the overwhelming expectation throughout the NFL is that the Pittsburgh Steelers will have Aaron Rodgers under center for the offense come the regular season. The veteran has been pretty nonexistent during the course of the offseason, so no one can truly know for sure, but the organization does not seem to be panicking in any way. The signal-caller could certainly be waiting for Organized Team Activities (OTAs) to pass before committing to signing a new deal, similarly to what he did back in 2025 when he delayed until June.

The Steelers haven't been very specific when getting asked about the quarterback throughout the offseason. General Manager Omar Khan has constantly stated that Rodgers knows how the team feels about him and vice versa; however, the brass has no clear future plan at the most important position in all of sports. The decision-makers also did their due diligence during the pre-draft process regarding signal-callers.
Initially, Rodgers was apparently going to tell Pittsburgh roughly 30 days after the season ended. The weeks and months that followed proved that those expectations were null and void. Team Owner Art Rooney II then spoke about a decision coming before the NFL Draft begins on April 23rd. Unfortunately, that doesn't appear to be the case, either.
Rooney recently sat down with Bob Pompeani of CBS Pittsburgh and walked back his prior comments, stating that a decision from Rodgers is expected soon, but it apparently no longer will come prior to the big event in the Steel City.
"I don't know if it'll be before the draft," Rooney told Pompeani. "I think it'll be soon; can't put an exact date on it or anything like that, but yeah, I think it'll happen sooner โ one way or the other."
Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks of all time and certainly deserves time to make a decision about retirement. However, if he has already informed the franchise that he will be returning, it would be in the team's best interest for him to attend almost all of the offseason activities. Instead, it seems as if he could be delaying his official commitment until he absolutely needs to put pen to paper.

Rooney isn't often in the public eye, so the interview with Pompeani could have been a calculated public relations attempt to settle any nerves that fans may have with the NFL Draft so close. What will make things a little more intriguing is if the Steelers decide to draft a quarterback, which would theoretically lead to four being on the roster if Rodgers returns. This is not something that Pittsburgh has historically done.
There have been plenty of reports of late that suggest the Steelers do not have any clue what Rodgers will do. Once again, the media is talking about the 42-year-old in an offseason. This seems to have been a trend in recent years. Regardless, Rooney's comment might hint at the fact that the franchise really doesn't have a single clue about what the veteran is going to do.
Until Rodgers announces his return or retirement, speculation will continue to grow. The Steelers have one of the more complex quarterback situations in the NFL, but that quickly goes away if the four-time MVP signs another contract. Unfortunately, that may not occur until late May with Pittsburgh set to start mandatory minicamp in the first week of June.

Steelers Seem Very Unbothered By Rodgers' Delayed Decision
The worst case scenario for Pittsburgh is starting Will Howard at quarterback if the future Hall of Famer does decide to retire. This isn't something that is being looked at as a negative because the team would either thrive and have its guy, or have an underwhelming year that leads to a top draft selection in 2027. Either way, the clock is ticking for Rodgers; however, it doesn't seem to have a true deadline.
