The Pittsburgh Steelers have some great history as a franchise, and a lot of that is due to the players that have donned the black and gold throughout the years. Legends of the game have played for the Steelers, and there are plenty of funny stories that come out of Pittsburgh. Some of the best times for the franchise seem to be in the early to mid-2000s, right around when the organization was able to capture its fifth and sixth Lombardi Trophies. Those teams were loaded with talent, and the leaders on the roster also kept everyone in check.

Former Steelers linebacker Joey Porter Sr. hypes up the home crowd during a game at the then Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, PA.
One player that everyone seems to have some sort of funny story about is Joey Porter Sr. He played for Pittsburgh from 1999 through 2006, and he was a part of the team that won Super Bowl LX. He was known for his trash talking and violent way of playing the game, and that even continued into practice as he would talk trash to the Pittsburgh offense. He recently posted a video of him telling a story of a time from early on in his career where he decided for some reason to talk trash to running back Jerome Bettis, and that obviously did not go well for the defender. The story began with Porter being asked if anyone ever made him feel like he needed to stop talking so much trash.
"No," Porter said. "But, Jerome got me. We had talked sh*t before, like when I was on scout team as a rookie, I was just the scout team defense. So whoever we were playing that week, I get to be that guy. My rookie year, I used to go in there and watch practice from scout team and say that was the fun part of practice. Because it was against the number ones. But then I became a starter, so now we have a Friday Night Lights practice. Me and Bussy were up talking sh*t all night. Then it happened, me against him, and whop! My sh*t was dead. My whole left side was dead."
Porter entered the league in 1999, and Bettis had been in the league since 1993. The running back was the star in Pittsburgh when Porter was drafted to the team, so of course the two saw a good amount of one another in practice when Porter was on the scout team.

Porter eventually became a starter, and he and Bettis were talking trash during training camp. That is when the Friday Night Lights practice is held that Porter references in the story. This practice is always intense and full of great team drills as well as one-on-ones. Porter and Bettis went to head-to-head, and Bettis definitely got the best of the outside linebacker.
Anyone that watched Porter play should not be surprised by the fact that he was talking so much trash to Bettis. He was an ultra-competitive guy, but he probably rethought talking trash to the veteran running back ever again. They called Bettis "The Bus" for a reason, and Porter found out why on that day. He said his left side was numb for a decent amount of time, and he's probably lucky that's all that happened as a result of the clash between the two.
Steelers' Jerome Bettis Had A Magical End To His Career
Porter and Bettis may have gone at it during practice, but the two definitely made each other better. At the end of the 2005 season, they were able to finally win a Super Bowl, and the game happened to take place in Bettis' hometown of Detroit. It was the last game of his career, and before the AFC Championship Game, he had given the team a speech talking about how they just needed to get him to Detroit. His extra motivation certainly helped Pittsburgh win Super Bowl XL.

Bettis wasn't really the starter for Pittsburgh at this point in his career, but he still carried the ball 14 times for 43 yards in the game. Porter added on three tackles.
