The Pittsburgh Steelers have been extremely busy over the last several days as mandatory minicamp has gotten underway. The franchise has been taking care of some contractual business with players who are eligible for extensions, and the organization also signed two players that were trying out for the team at minicamp.

The first signing that Pittsburgh made was tight end Robert Tonyan. He has a strong history with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and he was brought in to try out for the time and signed a deal on Thursday. Jamin Davis also signed a deal with the Steelers on Thursday. This does not mean that either player is going to make the team at the end of training camp, but they will have a shot to make their mark in Latrobe and earn a spot on the final roster.
The Steelers just announced they’ve officially signed LB Jamin Davis and TE Robert Tonyan to one-year contracts.

Both were at minicamp for tryouts, join the 90-man roster and will compete for spots in Latrobe.
Tonyan has some familiarity with the team already due to his connection with Rodgers, and Mike McCarthy was also his head coach with the Green Bay Packers for a little while. Davis also has some strong connections within the building as he played under Defensive Coordinator Patrick Graham during the 2025 season while they were both with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Davis is an interesting signing as he is a former first-round pick. He was selected 19th overall back in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Washington Commanders, and his time in Washington was a bit bizarre. He began as an off-ball, inside linebacker, and he had found some success. He led the team in tackles during the 2022 season before getting hurt.
Davis had his fifth-year option declined and switched to defensive end during the 2024 offseason, which is the position he played in his final season in Washington. Since then he has bounced around after not being brought back by the Commanders.

Steelers Will Be Using Jamin Davis On The Edge
Pittsburgh's outside linebacker group is already elite, but that is where Davis will be working. He has not been an off-ball linebacker since the 2023 season, so playing him there would be a weird move. He will spend time coming off the edge and attacking the passer as he will compete for a roster spot in Latrobe.
What do you think of this signing by Pittsburgh? Let me know on X, @brogannoey!
