The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to look like a completely different football team in 2026, and not just because Mike McCarthy is replacing Mike Tomlin as head coach. Following another disappointing playoff exit to end the 2025 season, Tomlin stepped away, paving the way for McCarthy to become just the fourth head coach in franchise history since 1969.

McCarthy now faces the challenge of getting Pittsburgh back into the playoff conversation and ending a postseason drought that dates back to the 2016 postseason, when the Steelers last won a playoff game. Along with a new head coach comes an entirely new coaching staff, and one of McCarthy's most intriguing hires has been former Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Domata Peko as the team's defensive line coach.
According to Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo, the difference between Peko and former defensive line coach Karl Dunbar is already striking. Speaking with Mark Kaboly on the Steelers Collective podcast, Fittipaldo explained why he believes the change could provide exactly the spark Pittsburgh's defensive line needs.
"I'm gonna go with an energy guy, and I don't think there could be more of a contrast between this new position coach and the position coach he replaced, and that's Domata Peko," Fittipaldo said. "Karl Dunbar was a pro, man, but he was very laid back. If there was ever a reason to make a change, and I know it only happened because of Tomlin, but that defensive line group needs some spark and needs some energy. Just listening to Peko talk that one day we got to talk to him down at the indoor complex, man, he just has a ton of energy, man. I love it. I think it's gonna be real good for Cam. Obviously, great for those young guys like Keeanu Benton, Derrick Harmon. I think they need someone like that coaching that position."
Peko enters Pittsburgh with limited coaching experience but an accomplished NFL playing career, leaving plenty of intrigue surrounding what he'll bring to one of the Steelers' most important position groups.

While there are still unknowns, there's also confidence that his experience as a longtime NFL veteran can translate into success on the sidelines. Kaboly agreed with Fittipaldo's take regarding Peko, but did echo there is a worry as well.
"The only thing I worry about with him, Ray, is there's just not much resume there in terms of coaching," Kaboly said.
Fittipaldo immediately pushed back on Kaboly's concern, arguing that the defensive line coach position isn't one that requires an extensive coaching resume. He compared it to coaching wide receivers, saying it's more about connecting with players and teaching the finer points of the position.
Based on what he's seen so far, Fittipaldo believes Peko is a home-run hire for Pittsburgh.
Steelers' Cam Heyward Looking To Beat Father Time Once More
During the 2023 season, many Steelers fans started to write off veteran Cam Heyward, claiming he was too old and that the game had passed him by. However, Heyward was actually playing through a severe groin injury that season. He reminded the NFL of his greatness in both 2024 and 2025, re-establishing himself as one of the league's best defensive linemen.

Now, entering the 2026 season at 37 years old, Heyward will once again look to beat the odds. With a new voice and fresh energy in Peko, the veteran will try to defy Father Time one more time.
