The Pittsburgh Steelers have finally reported to St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania for 2026 training camp. It has been a very busy offseason for the organization, as a mass coaching overhaul took place. Now, the team will be led by the offensive-minded veteran in Mike McCarthy. This was a very solid hire, particularly for those guys on that side of the ball. That phase of the game has been inconsistent for the franchise as of late, so the hope is that the experienced Super Bowl champion will be able to get everybody on the same page rather quickly.

The biggest piece of the puzzle will be future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers. No one was quite sure if he was going to give it a go for one more professional campaign, but it seems as if McCarthy's presence played a big part in him returning to the Steel City. The two will try to recreate the magic that they were able to put together while with the Green Bay Packers.
The signal-caller has already stated that 2026 will be his final season. That will create storylines on a week-by-week basis, as the Steelers are hoping to help him with one more deep postseason run. When he mentioned to the media after re-signing that this will be it for his career, it certainly motivated those in the locker room even more to put every ounce of effort into offseason workouts.
Training camp has now arrived and fans are getting to hear from players for the first time in a little while. The first individual to speak with the media on Tuesday morning was DK Metcalf. He will be a crucial part of the offensive operation and actually has Rodgers as his roommate in Latrobe. The wideout said something very interesting that will absolutely be picked up by several sports outlets around the country. Mark Kaboly was first to report it.
"DK Metcalf -- [suitemates and friend] of Aaron Rodgers -- said that it is possibly Rodgers' last year. Said maybe he doesn't get hit and balls out and wants to come back," Kaboly posted on social media.
Whether Metcalf was serious or not remains to be seen. However, it's notable that he said the 2026 campaign might not be Rodgers' final season. If the offensive line can protect the quarterback and he is performing at a high level, it might be possible for him to consider returning again. That's all hypothetical, but it's fascinating to hear that from someone who has spent a significant amount of time with Rodgers since both joined the Steelers.

This will suddenly turn into more questions. The Steelers have to get through training camp, the preseason and then the games that matter before there is further discussion. With that said, Rodgers has never been one to always show his hand. Saying that he would be retiring after the year could have simply been a way to get everyone in the locker room ready to play for him. That is something that a leader could potentially decide to do.
More ended up coming out about what Metcalf said. According to ESPN's Brooke Pryor, the pass-catcher seemed pretty serious about the 42-year-old not being done just yet.
"I mean, people just say things at the beginning of the year, not knowing how a year could go. He may not even get hit or touched this year and may say, 'Hey, let's go out there and do another one,'" Pryor noted.
Metcalf and Rodgers have developed a blossoming relationship that is great for Pittsburgh's offense. There are added weapons to the unit, but it's impossible to deny that Metcalf needs to have a breakout campaign in order to justify his price tag that came with the 2025 trade. He has big-play ability and could be one of the legitimate reasons why Rodgers would consider returning for yet another year with the Steelers. It's very interesting for the wideout to say something like that so early on.
Steelers' Future Quarterback Plans Could Be Delayed Once Again
Pittsburgh has consistently been connected to what should be a stout 2027 NFL Draft class. If, however, Rodgers lets the team know prior to April that he would consider coming back, a lot of those decisions could become even more complicated. For now, Steelers fans will enjoy the fact that the offense has a real shot to be dynamic. As the season goes on, however, speculation will start to run rampant regarding what the four-time MVP will say about his future.
