Steelers' Eli Heidenreich Showing Promising Signs Early In WR Transition

Pittsburgh Steelers fans witnessed a true storybook, feel-good moment straight out of a movie when the team selected dynamic rookie hybrid weapon Eli Heidenreich out of Navy. It was in the seventh round when Heidenreich finally got to hear his name called, and the moment became even more special because he was actually in Pittsburgh attending the draft. He got to experience an unforgettable moment on stage as he walked down, delivered his famous salute, and put on the hat of his favorite team, the Steelers.

Heidenreich is a Pittsburgh native who attended Mt. Lebanon High School and was born and raised in the area, making this selection much more meaningful than a traditional seventh-round pick. Of course, the first challenge is earning a spot on the roster, and after that, finding a consistent role on a talented Steelers team will be another challenge. 

The good news for Heidenreich is his ability to play that hybrid role as both a running back and wide receiver, giving him a unique skill set that could help his case as he fights to make the roster.

The very first thing Steeler Nation learned after this selection was just how impressive Heidenreich’s measurable athletic traits are, especially when compared to NFL star running back Christian McCaffrey. That is a bold comparison, but one based on athletic testing and skill set alone. It does not mean Heidenreich will become the next McCaffrey, but it does show that his rare versatility and physical tools cannot be ignored.

According to Steelers insider Chris Adamski, who has been at training camp providing excellent in-depth coverage, Heidenreich has already started making some impressive plays at wide receiver for the Steelers. It is still early, but seeing him create opportunities in the passing game is an encouraging sign as he continues his transition to the NFL.

"Eli Heidenreich (Mt Lebo, Navy) had a couple nice 'TD' catches lined up as a WR in today’s light walk-through," Adamski said. "He talks about using the veterans as a resource as he tries to make it in the NFL."

What was so interesting and exciting about Heidenreich is what he was able to accomplish in college. Despite Navy traditionally being a program that does not rely on throwing the football, Heidenreich was so productive as a receiver that he helped force the offense to break away from that identity.

He shattered the ceiling of Navy’s run-first triple-option system, showcasing a level of dual-threat versatility that is extremely rare. Heidenreich was responsible for 55.7% of Navy’s entire passing offense, recording 51 receptions for 941 yards and six receiving touchdowns. He was essentially a one-man aerial attack for a program where the passing game had historically taken a back seat.

That ability to create plays in a system not designed around throwing the football is a major reason why the Steelers saw potential in him as a unique offensive weapon. Heidenreich spoke with Adamski about what he is focused on learning as training camp continues and how he is using every opportunity to grow at the NFL level.

"There is an incredible amount of talent and knowledge," Heidenreich said. "I think that's the second thing that not a lot of people think about... I really try to pick their brains as much as I can and just be a sponge and soak up all the knowledge."

For Heidenreich, the journey is only beginning, but the opportunity in front of him is special. From growing up in Pittsburgh and fulfilling a childhood dream of joining the Steelers, to proving he could thrive as a receiver in Navy’s unique offense, his path has been anything but ordinary. 

Now, the focus shifts to earning the trust of his coaches, continuing to learn from the veterans around him, and proving that his rare versatility can translate to the NFL level. If Heidenreich continues making plays and embracing the process, he could become one of the most intriguing young players to watch as the Steelers prepare for the upcoming season.
