"Definitely Interested": Steelers' Bidding War Brewing For Joey Porter Jr

At some point, the Pittsburgh Steelers need to make a firm decision on Joey Porter Jr. The organization could place him on Injured Reserve (IR), trade him, uncharacteristically give out an extension in-season, or somehow convince him to play on his rookie deal. Regardless, there are a lot of moving pieces. It's already Week 4 and the team is preparing to play on short rest. No one is quite sure whether or not the cornerback will be active for a Thursday Night Football bout with the Cleveland Browns. It's possible that the former second-round selection isn't even with the Black and Gold by then.

Reports have started to surface regarding the Steelers thinking about finally moving on from the disgruntled defender. He has not been given that new contract that he was probably hoping for. Porter is entering the prime of his career, so he should be worth a good bit if another organization wants to acquire him. The challenge for Omar Khan will be figuring out what the lowest price is that he would be willing to accept. 

The New York Giants might be interested in making this kind of move, which could make a ton of sense because of their need for help in the secondary. John Harbaugh also has some familiarity with the corner after going up against him from 2023 to 2025. The best thing for the Steelers' decision-makers might just be a bidding war. This would drive the price up and lead to a respectable return.

Something like that could be getting ready to transpire. New York isn't the only operation that seems to have some kind of intrigue in Porter. In fact, another squad in the same division is looking into everything.

On Tuesday, veteran NFL insider Josina Anderson went into detail about how Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys are viewing the situation. Apparently, the NFC East foe is strongly considering making a move. However, the two sides are not on the same page when it comes to compensation. That could provide a significant hurdle for Pittsburgh.

"I was told Tuesday morning that the Pittsburgh Steelers have received a recent inquiry from the Dallas Cowboys on the status of cornerback Joey Porter Jr.," Anderson reported. "The Cowboys are definitely interested, but the two sides have their thresholds on compensation values for a transaction and right now, 'it doesn’t match,' per league sources."

When reports like this come out, there's no way to tell which side could be leaking the information. Overall, however, it seems as if there have been some discussions between Khan and Jones. The Steelers do hold plenty of leverage, with the franchise tag being an option for the next two years following the 2026 campaign. Despite that, the distraction and noise may be getting too loud to see that kind of strategy through.

At this point, it's becoming increasingly likely that the Steelers will indeed move on from Porter. There has to be some level of confidence in the rest of the cornerbacks on the roster to make this kind of decision. Pittsburgh didn't want to pay what it felt would be too much, and now the consequences are starting to show up in full force.

The good news is that there seems to be a genuine interest around the NFL for Porter. The Giants and Cowboys are said to be inquiring about the playmaker, as are the Detroit Lions. The more general managers that come calling, the better overall when it comes to driving up the price. That could be exactly what is happening as Week 4 matchups inch closer.

Steelers Can't Give In During Porter Negotiations

Khan is a smart individual who likely knows exactly what kind of situation he is in. Pittsburgh waited this out up until this point, so there is no real reason to give in with October on the horizon. If the decision has been made internally to engage in trade talks, then the Steelers have to be absolutely sure that the compensation they are getting in return makes sense.
