The Pittsburgh Steelers have yet another potential destination to consider if they ultimately decide to trade cornerback Joey Porter Jr. The possibility of Pittsburgh moving Porter has generated plenty of conversation around the NFL, and the Green Bay Packers have now been mentioned as an intriguing landing spot. If the Steelers actually make Porter available before the trade deadline, there could be significantly more interest than Pittsburgh initially anticipated.

Porter's situation remains fascinating because talented young cornerbacks don't frequently become available during the season. The Steelers would have to determine whether moving him makes their defense better in the long term while also weighing whatever compensation interested teams are willing to offer. Pittsburgh certainly shouldn't move Porter simply for the sake of making a change, but an active market could create an opportunity General Manager Omar Khan has to seriously evaluate.
NFL insider Albert Breer discussed potential destinations for Porter and specifically identified Green Bay as a team worth watching. The Packers have a need at cornerback, although Breer questioned whether they would be willing to surrender additional draft capital after making a massive investment to acquire Micah Parsons last year. Still, the potential fit was intriguing enough for Breer to put Green Bay into the conversation.
"The Packers would be an interesting one too," Breer said. "I think there's a little bit of a need at corner there. Would the Packers do it after trading draft capital away last year for Micah Parsons? I'm a little less sure of that. But you could reunite Porter with his old Penn State teammate coming back off the ACL."
That last part makes Green Bay particularly interesting. Porter and Parsons spent time together at Penn State, giving Porter an immediate connection inside a defense that could potentially use another talented cornerback. Familiarity alone isn't enough to make a trade happen, but it adds another layer to a destination that already makes sense from a roster perspective.
The bigger question is what Green Bay would actually be willing to give Pittsburgh. As Breer mentioned, the Packers have already sacrificed valuable draft capital to acquire Parsons. Teams only have so many premium assets to work with, and Green Bay would have to decide whether adding Porter is worth making another aggressive investment.
Pittsburgh would also have to be comfortable with the return. Porter is still a young cornerback with size, starting experience and the pedigree that made him an early second-round selection. Even if the Steelers have reasons to entertain a move, Khan shouldn't be looking to simply dump a player with that type of talent. Breer believes Pittsburgh could have plenty of options if Porter actually becomes available.
"Those are some of the teams that I'm looking at, but I would say if a corner of Joey Porter's caliber comes available in October and at the beginning of November before that trade deadline, the market would certainly be active," Breer said.
That might be the most important part of the entire conversation for Pittsburgh. An active market creates leverage. If multiple teams believe Porter could immediately upgrade their secondary, Khan would have an opportunity to let interested organizations compete rather than accepting the first reasonable offer that reaches his desk.
The Steelers also don't have to trade Porter. That is what makes this situation considerably different from a team desperately attempting to unload a veteran contract or move a player who no longer has a role. Pittsburgh can evaluate offers and simply keep Porter if nobody presents enough value to justify weakening the secondary.

Green Bay entering the conversation adds another fascinating possibility, but it also demonstrates why Pittsburgh should remain patient. The Steelers have time before the trade deadline to evaluate Porter, monitor their secondary and determine exactly what his future should look like. There is no reason for Khan to rush into a decision.

Breer's larger point should have Khan's attention. If Porter becomes available and the market is truly active, Pittsburgh could suddenly have several teams competing for his services. That is exactly the type of environment a general manager wants when considering a significant trade.
