Steelers Rookie Max Iheanachor Turning Heads With Veteran-Like Approach Ahead Of Week 4 Battle

The Pittsburgh Steelers may have found their answer to recent offensive line struggles in the form of a rookie tackle. Max Iheanachor made his first NFL start in the team's Week 3 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals and had an amazing debut. Pittsburgh's offensive line had one of its best performances in several seasons and this led to a much-needed offensive explosion in which the Steelers' offense put up 30 points against a solid Bengals defense. The future is very bright for Iheanachor as he received high praise after his performance.

The Steelers' offensive line had a stellar performance overall that allowed quarterback Aaron Rodgers to throw for 292 total yards and 3 touchdowns. The unit also paved the way for standout running back Jaylen Warren to rush for 127 yards and snag 3 receptions for 49 receiving yards. The offense as a whole was firing on all cylinders, something that Steelers fans desperately needed to see. Through the first two weeks of the 2026 season, the offense looked hopeless, especially in the team's Week 2 matchup with the New England Patriots, in which the unit put up a disappointing 3 points. Many fans believed the main struggle within the offense was the offensive line, a theory that seems to have been proven right after the Steelers' Week 3 victory. If Iheanachor and the rest of the offensive line can continue to produce this output weekly, Pittsburgh's offense could become a consistent threat. 

During a recent episode of The Pomp and Joe Show from 93.7 The Fan, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly spoke about Iheanachor's performance and how the rookie's calm demeanor is showing his maturity. 

"Not only watching him [Iheanachor] but talking to him after. The guy was so even-keeled," Kaboly noted. "You would think he would be pumped up, but he seemed like a veteran that I was talking to. As long as he keeps that technique, he is going to be very hard to beat."

What makes Iheanachor's performance so encouraging is the fact that he was not expected to be in Pittsburgh's starting lineup this early into his rookie season. He was seen as a raw prospect coming out of the 2026 NFL Draft, in which the Steelers selected him with their first-round pick. Iheanachor was a late bloomer, not playing American football until 2021. This is incredible growth for the rookie offensive tackle and should instill confidence in Steelers fans that the team has found a cornerstone player on the offensive line. 

Iheanachor and the rest of the offensive line were able to open up the rushing attack. That is a very underrated key in the Steelers' offense. When Pittsburgh can run the football effectively, it is a dangerous team. A rock-solid run game and a nasty, hard-hitting defense is the type of football squad this team identifies as. With the improved performance by the offensive line, this scheme is a reality and something that fans hope can stay in the Steel City for the rest of the season.

The Steelers' Offensive Line Is Both Talented And Youthful 

Pittsburgh has spent a lot of time and resources on the offensive line over the past few seasons. The organization has spent six premium draft picks on offensive linemen since the 2023 NFL Draft, highlighted by offensive tackle Troy Fautanu in the 2024 first round, interior offensive linemen Zach Frazier and Mason McCormick in the second and fourth rounds of the same draft, respectivelyh. During the 2026 NFL Draft, Pittsburgh selected offensive linemen Gennings Dunker in the third round and the recent breakout star Iheanachor in the first round. Building up the trenches through the draft has always been the Pittsburgh way, but in the late 2010s and early 2020s, the team could not quite figure out the right pieces to the puzzle. It seems like the Steelers have turned things around and are finally on the cusp of developing a strong offensive line for many years to come.
