The Pittsburgh Steelers lost to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday Night Football in Week 4 by a score of 27-24. The game came down to a field goal from Cleveland after Pittsburgh fought back to tie the contest up at 24. In a lot of ways it was a heartbreaking loss for the Steelers as the game could end up being pivotal in the AFC North as the Steelers fell to 2-2 and the Browns moved to 3-1 on the year. It was a bad game all around for the Steelers as the offense, defense, and special teams made errors that wound up costing Pittsburgh the game.

Oct 1, 2026; Cleveland, Ohio, USA; Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy reacts in the first half at Huntington Bank Field.
The Steelers started the game out strong offensively as Pittsburgh drove the ball down the field for a touchdown on its first possession of the game, but things went dormant after that. The offense turned the ball over in the first half which led to a Browns touchdown, and the offense only managed to put three more points up in the first half.
The Steelers went into halftime trailing 21-10, and that offensive lull was ultimately the difference in the game. There was also clearly some frustration on the offensive side of the ball for Pittsburgh.
If I just read lips properly on Prime:

Rodgers to McCarthy: "What the f*ck. Call it."
McCarthy into his headset: "Fu*king a*shole"
During the first half, the broadcast aired a dispute between quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Head Coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy was calling a play in, and Rodgers screamed some expletives from the huddle, and the broadcast then showed McCarthy calling Rodgers some names. McCarthy was asked about this exchange while speaking to the media after the game, and he played dumb a little bit, but ultimately acknowledged it.
"Yeah, Burt said something about something on the TV," McCarthy said. "Communication sometimes is not the best choice of words, everybody's competing on the field. What's said on the field, the way I grew up in this game, usually stays on the field, that's not the case today, I understand that. But yeah, any negative communication on my part, I wish I wouldn't have used those words."
This is not the first time during the 2026 season that there has been some visible frustration between McCarthy and Rodgers, and it won't be the last. The two know each other very well from their time with the Green Bay Packers, and the media is almost certainly making more of this scenario than the two of them are themselves.

Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and his offensive line facing the Cleveland Browns during the 2025 NFL season.
Rodgers and McCarthy spent a lot of time together in Green Bay, and the two experienced a ton of highs together along with some lows. The two will be back working together like normal in the coming days, and what was caught on the broadcast was just a heated exchange between two guys trying to win a football game. It seemed like Rodgers was upset that the plays were not coming in quicker, and it is something that the two seemed to fix throughout the rest of the game.
Steelers Don't Need To Worry About Rodgers' Past With McCarthy
Things did not end all that great when McCarthy was fired by the Packers in the middle of the 2018 season. His relationship with Rodgers was on the rocks, and the two did not end on the best of terms.
They became friendly again this decade, and McCarthy being hired in Pittsburgh was a big reason that Rodgers decided to come back and play another season. Pundits will try to relate the moment from the Thursday Night Football broadcast to what happened at the end of their time together with the Packers, but fans in Pittsburgh probably have nothing to worry about when it comes to those two.
What did you think about the heated exchange and McCarthy's comments after the game? Let me know on X, @brogannoey!
