The Pittsburgh Steelers welcomed back a familiar face this week when veteran linebacker Elandon Roberts returned to the organization, but the story behind his reunion is more complicated than fans initially realized. Roberts was surprisingly released following training camp, leaving many wondering why Pittsburgh moved on from a player who had performed well throughout the preseason. Now, the veteran has explained what was happening behind the scenes.

Roberts officially rejoined Pittsburgh's practice squad on Monday, October 12, giving Defensive Coordinator Patrick Graham another experienced linebacker to work with. The decision came after five games in which the Steelers experienced inconsistent performances from their defense. However, Roberts' return also raised an interesting question about whether there were any hard feelings between the player and the organization that previously released him.
While speaking with reporters Wednesday, Roberts addressed that situation directly, according to ESPN's Brooke Pryor. The veteran revealed that he had been dealing with a personal matter around the time Pittsburgh released him, which would have required his attention regardless of his roster status. He also made it clear that he wasn't holding a grudge against the Steelers.
"I wouldn't have came back if I was uncomfortable. ... I know a lot of people feel a way. It's a business at the end of the day," Roberts said.
That explanation adds important context to one of Pittsburgh's more surprising preseason decisions. Roberts had signed with the Steelers in August and immediately reminded fans why he became such a popular player during his previous stint. His physical style and willingness to attack ball carriers made his release particularly difficult to understand.
However, Roberts' comments suggest the circumstances surrounding his absence were more complicated than football alone. Pryor reported that he received offers from other NFL teams, but was addressing his personal situation at the time. Once that matter was resolved, his agent began making calls, eventually helping arrange another opportunity in Pittsburgh.
"I kind of went through something personal that I would've had to step away from the team for anyway to take care of that," Roberts said. "So that's why I say everything happened for a reason, and I'm always trying to be the best version of myself."
Roberts did not publicly disclose the details of that personal matter, and there's no reason to speculate about what he experienced. What's significant is that he now feels comfortable returning to an organization that previously made the difficult decision to release him. His willingness to come back speaks to the relationships he maintained in Pittsburgh.
Steelers' Elandon Roberts Offers Unexpected Perspective On His Release
The Steelers originally signed Roberts in 2023, and he quickly established himself as a physical presence in the middle of their defense. Across two seasons, he appeared in 33 games, started 29 and recorded 147 tackles. His aggressive approach made him particularly valuable against opposing rushing attacks.
Roberts spent the 2025 season with the Las Vegas Raiders, starting 16 games and finishing with 90 tackles. His defensive coordinator in Las Vegas was Graham, creating another important connection when Pittsburgh hired Graham this offseason. That familiarity could make Roberts' latest transition considerably easier.

General Manager Omar Khan also deserves credit for keeping communication open following the surprising release. When asked about Roberts in August, Khan made it clear that Pittsburgh wasn't completely shutting the door on another reunion. Less than two months later, that possibility became reality.
The timing is especially interesting considering the Steelers' linebacker situation. Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson have handled significant responsibilities, but Pittsburgh could benefit from another experienced defender who understands how to play physical football. Roberts brings a different presence, particularly when opponents attempt to establish their running game.
Still, signing Roberts to the practice squad doesn't guarantee he'll immediately receive defensive snaps. He must earn an opportunity to join the active roster, and Pittsburgh will have to determine how his skill set fits its current plans. His experience and familiarity with Graham should help that process.
Perhaps the most encouraging part of this development has little to do with tackles or defensive schemes. Roberts could have viewed his release as a reason to move on permanently, especially after receiving interest from other teams. Instead, he handled his personal responsibilities and eventually found his way back to Pittsburgh.
The Steelers have regained a respected veteran, while Roberts has received another opportunity with an organization he knows well. His comments make it clear that the reunion isn't about proving Pittsburgh wrong. It's about moving forward and helping the team win.
