The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for a historic international matchup against the New Orleans Saints, but growing concerns surrounding safety in Paris have become a major storyline ahead of Sunday's game. With widespread protests and violent unrest affecting parts of France, questions have emerged about whether the NFL should proceed with its scheduled contest. Commissioner Roger Goodell has now addressed the situation directly, offering an important update about the league's involvement with government officials. His comments make it clear that the NFL is taking the concerns seriously while continuing preparations for the game.

The Steelers defeated the Vikings 24-21.

Pittsburgh is scheduled to face New Orleans on October 25 at Stade de France, marking the NFL's first regular-season game in the country. What was supposed to be a celebration of the league's international expansion has become a complicated situation following unrest across France. Demonstrations over living costs and conditions in schools have been accompanied by violent clashes, property damage, and thousands of arrests. The developments have understandably raised questions about the safety of players, coaches, families, and traveling fans.

Goodell spoke in New York on Wednesday and explained that the NFL has been working closely with officials in France and the United States. The commissioner revealed that those conversations have reached the highest levels of government, including direct communication with the U.S. Secretary of State. His message emphasized the importance of gathering accurate information and coordinating with the authorities responsible for security.

"We are involved at the highest level both in France -- a global basis with our officials here in the United States," Goodell said. "I had a conversation with the Secretary of State a couple of days ago. We are continuing to make sure we have all the available information, making sure the appropriate steps are being made."

That is a significant statement from the NFL commissioner considering the circumstances surrounding Pittsburgh's upcoming game. Goodell is not simply relying on routine preparations for an international event. According to his comments, the league is actively communicating with government officials to better understand the situation and determine what precautions are necessary.

The involvement of the State Department also demonstrates how much responsibility comes with organizing an NFL game overseas. The league must consider far more than what happens inside the stadium on Sunday. Teams have to travel, practice, move between locations, and accommodate personnel throughout the week. Thousands of supporters could also be traveling internationally to attend the matchup.

Goodell continued by acknowledging that the NFL must respect the authority of the country hosting its event. Rather than suggesting the league could independently control the circumstances surrounding the game, he expressed confidence in the officials responsible for maintaining security.

"We are guests in the country. We are going to be good guests and going to do our thing and I'm confident they are going to do theirs," Goodell said.

Those comments provide insight into how the NFL intends to approach the weekend. The league is moving forward with its plans while trusting French authorities to handle their responsibilities. However, that confidence does not eliminate the importance of monitoring conditions as kickoff approaches.

Steelers Face Critical Safety Questions Ahead Of Historic Paris Game

The Steelers and Saints are entering an unusual situation for a regular-season matchup. International games already present challenges involving travel, preparation, and unfamiliar surroundings. The additional security concerns introduce another factor that neither organization would ordinarily have to consider during a typical NFL week.
