The Pittsburgh Steelers have already been bitten by the injury bug pretty badly throughout the first few weeks of the 2026 NFL season. The wide receiver position has been beaten up, the secondary has had some problems, and the defensive line has just become a major issue. Second-year player Derrick Harmon has been on Injured Reserve (IR) for quite some time now, and now he is joined by another veteran on the defensive line.

Veteran defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day was placed on IR on Thursday, and he is now going to be forced to miss at least the next four games. He was placed on IR before the team travelled to Paris, so he will likely be staying back to rehab and recover. This news was reported by insider Mark Kaboly.

There have not been any major specifics reported about the injury for the veteran defender. He has missed significant time in his career before and that was for a torn pectoral muscle which required surgery. He has been a force when it comes to stopping the run, especially with Harmon being on IR. He also was one of the heroes in Pittsburgh's win over the Cincinnati Bengals as he recovered the game-winning fumble.

It is unclear how long Joseph-Day will be out, but fans should know that per the NFL rules, a player placed on IR must miss at least four games. It is not four weeks, so the bye week does not count. He will not be eligible to return to the field until Week 12 when the Steelers host the Denver Broncos. That is quite a hit for the defense. The defensive front has been rotating quite a bit to keep everybody fresh, and now this injury throws a wrench in any of those plans. With Harmon being out, the Steelers have been giving rookie Gabriel Rubio a helmet on game days and he has been impressing. Now, it might be time for another rookie to step up.

Kevin Jobity Jr. is the only undrafted rookie free agent who made the team in Pittsburgh for the 2026 season, and is probably the next man up when it comes to defensive linemen. He should be given a helmet for Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints in Paris. It will be interesting to see how he performs considering how highly the coaches spoke of him throughout training camp and the preseason.

Steelers' Sebastian Joseph-Day Can Still Make An Impact

Even though Joseph-Day will not be on the field for the Steelers anytime soon, he will still be capable of making a positive impact. He is a player that has seen a lot of football and he has played for a handful of teams. He has been on teams that have made it to the Super Bowl and teams that are slotted to pick at the top of the draft. He can provide a ton of perspective for the younger guys, and he is one of the more experienced players on the defensive line for Pittsburgh.

Joseph-Day has also been voted as a captain before in his career, which says a lot about the kind of person he is within the locker room. He will likely stay positive throughout his journey back to the field, and he will do what he can to help the team win in the meantime. So far on the year he has recorded 10 total tackles to go along with that fumble recovery, but those stats don't necessarily measure what he does when it comes to clogging up holes in the run game.

What do you think the Steelers should do now with Joseph-Day hitting IR? Let me know on X, @brogannoey!
