The Pittsburgh Steelers have plenty of reasons to believe the 2026 NFL season could become something special. Head Coach Mike McCarthy has Pittsburgh sitting at 5-2 following an important victory over the New Orleans Saints in Paris. However, the biggest question surrounding this organization remains whether the Steelers can finally make a serious postseason run. Former Pittsburgh quarterback Russell Wilson recently offered an interesting perspective on that possibility, delivering a powerful message about TJ Watt, Cam Heyward, and Aaron Rodgers.

Wilson understands the expectations that come with playing quarterback for the Steelers. He also recognizes how much Watt and Heyward have invested in the organization throughout their careers. Both defensive stars have accomplished plenty individually, but neither has experienced the satisfaction of winning a Super Bowl. With Rodgers now leading Pittsburgh's offense, Wilson believes an important opportunity is sitting directly in front of them.
During an appearance on Set Hut with Kordell Stewart and Chris Long through NFL on CBS, Wilson discussed Pittsburgh's championship aspirations. Rather than focusing exclusively on Rodgers, Wilson emphasized what winning would mean for two longtime Steelers defensive leaders. His comments made it clear that he believes the veterans deserve an opportunity to finish their careers with football's ultimate achievement.
"I think a guy like TJ Watt, I think a guy like Cam Heyward, what they have done and what they mean to Pittsburgh as a whole," Wilson said. "It's their time. It's their time to finally win one, and hopefully Aaron Rodgers can take them all the way. If they can win this division, we will see what happens."
That is a meaningful endorsement coming from someone who knows the organization firsthand. Wilson's time in Pittsburgh did not produce the championship run he envisioned, but his comments suggest he still appreciates the importance of the franchise's veteran leaders.
Watt and Heyward have become synonymous with Steelers football. Their leadership, consistency, and commitment have helped establish the defensive identity Pittsburgh has relied upon for years. However, individual accomplishments can only provide so much satisfaction when the ultimate goal remains unfulfilled.

For Heyward, the championship conversation carries particular significance. The veteran defensive lineman has dedicated a substantial portion of his life to representing Pittsburgh, earning respect through his performance and leadership. Seeing him finally compete for a Super Bowl would mean something beyond another successful season.
Watt faces a similar situation. His ability to disrupt opposing offenses has made him one of the NFL's most recognizable defensive players, but postseason success has remained elusive. Wilson's comments reflect the belief that players of their caliber deserve an opportunity to compete for a championship.
Rodgers is the fascinating variable in this equation. The veteran quarterback has already experienced championship success, and Pittsburgh brought him in with expectations extending beyond regular-season victories. His experience could prove invaluable if the Steelers find themselves competing in meaningful January football.
Former Steelers QB Russell Wilson Believes Championship Window Is Open For Pittsburgh
Wilson's emphasis on winning the division is another important part of his message. Pittsburgh cannot afford to overlook the challenge of navigating the AFC North, particularly with difficult matchups against familiar rivals still ahead.
Winning the division would provide the Steelers with a stronger postseason position and potentially an opportunity to host a playoff game. That advantage could become important for a team hoping to build momentum when the stakes increase.
There is also something refreshing about Wilson publicly supporting Rodgers. The two quarterbacks have experienced different chapters of their careers in Pittsburgh, but Wilson's comments were not about comparing their individual situations. Instead, he focused on the possibility of Rodgers helping Watt and Heyward accomplish something neither has achieved.
That perspective should resonate with Steelers fans. Pittsburgh has watched talented defensive players deliver memorable performances without experiencing the postseason success their efforts deserve. Wilson believes this season could provide an opportunity to change that narrative.
Of course, championship aspirations mean little without execution. McCarthy's team must continue developing offensively while maintaining the defensive intensity that helped secure Sunday's victory. The Steelers have established a promising foundation, but their most important football remains ahead.
Can Aaron Rodgers lead TJ Watt and Cam Heyward to a Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers? Let me know on X @anthonyghalkias.
