The Pittsburgh Steelers appear in trade discussions as the NFL deadline approaches, and Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs has now addressed his uncertain future. Pittsburgh has reportedly expressed interest in the pass catcher, making his latest comments relevant. While Downs stopped short of identifying a preferred destination, he made one thing clear. He is not closing the door on leaving Indianapolis.

The Steelers have reasons to explore another receiving option for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Injuries have complicated Pittsburgh's depth chart, and the organization has a connection to Indianapolis after acquiring Michael Pittman Jr. earlier this year. Downs would offer a different skill set, particularly with his ability to create separation underneath. However, interest does not guarantee a deal, especially when other teams are involved.

On Wednesday, Colts reporter Kevin Bowen shared Downs' response to questions about a possible trade. The receiver was asked directly about the uncertainty surrounding his name and whether he would welcome a change. His answer provided an intriguing development for Steelers fans monitoring the situation.

"I'm open to whatever," Downs said. "Whatever comes my way, comes my way, and we go from there."

Those words do not amount to a public request to join Pittsburgh. Still, they suggest Downs is prepared to consider life beyond the Colts rather than insisting he wants to remain with the organization. That distinction matters because Indianapolis has demonstrated a willingness to make roster changes. The team traded established veterans Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner as its direction shifted toward rebuilding.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Wednesday that Downs requested a trade. NFL insider Jordan Schultz subsequently identified Pittsburgh among multiple AFC teams expressing interest in the receiver. Schultz also reported that a move was not considered likely this week, although a trade was expected eventually. For the Steelers, that creates an opportunity worth monitoring without assuming negotiations are nearing completion.

Bowen also asked Downs whether he had wanted a contract extension with Indianapolis before the 2026 season. Considering the receiver is playing out the final year of his rookie contract, his answer could carry considerable weight. Downs did not sound eager to describe an extension as something he had been demanding.

"I mean, if it came my way, it came my way," Downs said. "But I wouldn't say that now."

The response leaves room for interpretation. Downs did not reject the possibility of staying in Indianapolis, but he also declined to say he had actively wanted a new agreement before the season. Combined with the reported trade request, his comments reinforce the impression that a change of scenery is realistic. Pittsburgh will have to determine whether acquiring him makes sense beyond the immediate season.

Steelers Could Benefit From Josh Downs' Valuable Trade Comments

Downs has recorded 26 receptions for 307 yards through seven games this season. Those numbers might not jump off the page, but they should not overshadow his ability to contribute in the slot. In 2024, he produced 72 catches for 803 yards and five touchdowns, demonstrating that he can handle meaningful volume. His quickness and route running could provide Rodgers with another reliable option in the passing game.

The financial question is equally important. Downs is approaching free agency, meaning any acquiring team must weigh the value of a short-term addition against the possibility of signing him beyond this season. Pittsburgh could view him as more than a temporary solution, but the Steelers would need confidence in his long-term fit before surrendering valuable draft capital.

There is also no reason to assume Indianapolis will accept Pittsburgh's preferred offer. Multiple interested teams can influence negotiations, and the Colts have time before the November 10 deadline. Downs' comments clarify his willingness to embrace whatever happens, not the price Indianapolis would require to move him.

For Steelers fans, the encouraging part is that a potential trade would not necessarily involve convincing Downs to accept an unfamiliar situation. His openness is apparent, even if his destination remains unsettled. Whether Pittsburgh ultimately acts on that opportunity is another matter.
