Steelers Defense Makes Browns Pay In Brutal First Half Of Rematch

The Pittsburgh Steelers are 30 minutes away from taking control of the AFC North. Pittsburgh leads the Cleveland Browns 20-6 at halftime of Sunday's Week 8 rematch at Acrisure Stadium, and the defense set the tone from the opening possession by forcing two fumbles before Cleveland could find any rhythm.

Cleveland's first drive fell apart quickly. Quarterback Deshaun Watson left for a concussion evaluation after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit on a third-down throw, a play that drew a roughing the passer penalty on Pittsburgh. Shedeur Sanders came on in relief, but the drive ended when tight end Harold Fannin Jr. fumbled on third down and the Steelers came up with the ball.

Pittsburgh could not cash in right away. Kicker Chris Boswell missed a 57-yard field goal wide left. It did not take long for the defense to give him another chance. Watson returned for the Browns' second possession and was strip-sacked on second-and-7, and the Steelers recovered in Cleveland territory, according to NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk.

That is where Rico Dowdle took over. The running back ripped off a 15-yard run to get Pittsburgh into the red zone and then went for back-to-back nine-yard gains. The second one went for a touchdown with 8:02 left in the first quarter to give the Steelers a 7-0 lead.

Steelers Run Game Carries The Offense

The ground game has been the story on offense. Pittsburgh ran for 160 yards on 18 carries in the first half, an average of nearly nine yards per attempt, with a long run of 51 yards. Ten of the Steelers' 14 first downs came on the ground, and they outgained Cleveland 244 to 113 in total yards.

The passing game has been more modest. The Steelers completed nine of 16 passes for 95 yards with no interceptions, and the offense did not lose a fumble. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and a short-handed receiver room have not needed to do much with the run game working this well. That group was already thin before kickoff, as SteelerNation detailed when the team announced its inactives on Sunday.

Boswell bounced back in the second quarter with a 20-yard field goal to make it 10-0, and he later added a 37-yarder. In between, Browns kicker Andre Szmyt hit from 32 yards, and he added a 49-yard field goal with 49 seconds left in the half to cut the lead to 13-6.

Steelers' Pat Freiermuth

Those 49 seconds turned out to be plenty. The Steelers moved down the field quickly, and tight end Pat Freiermuth plowed in from one yard out on a run up the middle with five seconds left. Boswell's extra point made it 20-6 at the break, turning a seven-point game back into a two-score cushion right after Cleveland had closed the gap.

Defensively, the numbers are just as lopsided. Pittsburgh has four sacks, eight quarterback hits and two fumble recoveries, and Cleveland has managed only 26 rushing yards on eight carries. The Browns have six first downs and have been held out of the end zone.

Head Coach Mike McCarthy and his team lost the first meeting 27-24 in Cleveland in Week 4, and the Browns have won two straight games on walk-off field goals, so a 14-point lead is far from safe. Still, if the defense keeps generating pressure and the run game keeps controlling the clock, Pittsburgh has a real chance to even the season series and take the upper hand in the division race.
