Steelers Locker Room Leak Suggests Veteran Is Now Out For The 2026 Season

The Pittsburgh Steelers have some time to get healthier during their Week 9 bye, but that does not mean every injured player will return when the team gets back to work. There is always a difference between what fans know about guys who are not competing and what those inside the building understand. One defender’s comments on Tuesday evening suggested that Pittsburgh could be dealing with a much bigger problem than many initially realized.

Steelers rookie edge rusher Jack Sawyer stands on the field at St. Vincent College as the team works out during a 2025 training camp practice in Latrobe, PA.

The defensive line is worth watching as the Steelers prepare for the second half of their schedule. Having enough bodies available matters, particularly when opponents try to establish the run and wear down the players up front. Pittsburgh would certainly prefer to have its full rotation available heading into an important stretch.

However, linebacker Jack Sawyer offered an unexpected update while speaking with insider Gerry Dulac on Chalk Talk via 102.5 WDVE. The conversation included some optimism about one teammate’s eventual return, but Sawyer’s next thought revealed something that had not been clear publicly.

His comments raised a serious question about whether another defensive lineman will play again this season.

"Obviously, we're looking forward to getting Derrick [Harmon] back," Sawyer stated. "It sucks we're not gonna be able to get Sebastian [Joseph-Day] back for — maybe at all,"

That is a concerning assessment regarding Sebastian Joseph-Day, especially because Sawyer discussed the situation as someone who sees his teammates every day. He did leave himself some room by saying “maybe,” so this should not serve as an official announcement that the veteran’s season is over. Nevertheless, it certainly did not sound like Sawyer expects a quick return.

The distinction matters. Missing a the minimum four games due to Injured Reserve (IR) rules would leave Pittsburgh trying to get through a temporary absence. Losing Joseph-Day for the remainder of the 2026 campaign would force the coaching staff to plan without him altogether. Sawyer’s phrasing suggests that the latter is at least a possibility, which makes this more significant than a passing mention of an injured teammate.

There was a positive part of the answer, as Sawyer expressed confidence about getting Derrick Harmon back. There has been some skepticism surrounding his return in recent weeks. However, expecting Harmon to return does not erase the concern surrounding Joseph-Day. Ideally, Pittsburgh would have both at its disposal rather than getting one player back while potentially losing another for good.

It also explains why Sawyer’s comments stood out. He was not delivering a formal injury update or announcing a roster move. He was talking about the players around him and what the defense has to look forward to. In doing so, he appeared to share a much less encouraging outlook for Joseph-Day than the public previously understood.

The Steelers will need to clarify the veteran’s status before anyone can definitively say his season has ended. Until then, Sawyer’s remarks are a reason to watch for the next update. There is a meaningful difference between suggesting a teammate might not return and confirming that medical staff has ruled him out.

For Pittsburgh, the potential consequences extend beyond who starts. Defensive linemen rotate throughout games, and a long-term absence can change how often everyone else has to play. A healthy group gives coaches more options to manage that workload. If Joseph-Day cannot return, those snaps will have to go elsewhere for considerably longer than fans might have anticipated before Tuesday’s update from Sawyer.

Steelers Could Need More Help Along The Defensive Line

Pittsburgh now has another injury situation to follow during the bye. Harmon’s anticipated return offers encouragement, but Joseph-Day’s outlook could leave the defense short of the group it hoped to have available.

Sawyer’s words should not replace an official update, and his hesitation leaves open the possibility of a return. Even so, “maybe at all” is difficult to overlook when discussing an injured teammate. The Steelers may eventually provide a more reassuring explanation. For now, one of their own defenders has given fans a reason to wonder whether Joseph-Day has already played his final snap of the 2026 season.
