The Pittsburgh Steelers are 6-2 and firmly in the AFC playoff picture, but their impressive record has not convinced everyone that they should be buyers ahead of the NFL trade deadline. Despite winning six of their first eight games, Pittsburgh has been warned against making a major move to strengthen its roster.

ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell wrote that the team may already be as good as it is going to get, he also included the Steelers among four teams with winning records that should avoid sacrificing significant draft capital for additions at the deadline. His reasoning is particularly notable because Pittsburgh has legitimate reasons to consider upgrading its roster, especially with questions surrounding its receiving corps and secondary.
"The Steelers are already fully formed, for better or worse.... The Steelers are 6-2, but the only one of those wins that has come against a likely contender was against the Bengals in Week 3," Barnwell wrote for ESPN.
The assessment is not necessarily an argument that Pittsburgh is a bad team. Instead, Barnwell is questioning whether the Steelers have enough room to improve to justify paying a premium for a player who might not significantly change their postseason outlook.
That is an important distinction for General Manager Omar Khan as the November 10 trade deadline approaches. Pittsburgh has positioned itself to compete for the AFC North, but the organization must decide whether adding another veteran would genuinely improve its chances of advancing through the playoffs.
Steelers Have Reasons To Stay Patient Despite Their 6-2 Record
Barnwell's argument starts with the quality of Pittsburgh's victories. While a 6-2 record deserves recognition, he pointed out that the Steelers' Week 3 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals was their only win against an opponent he considered a likely contender.
That raises questions about how the team will perform against the NFL's strongest competition. Pittsburgh has done enough to win consistently and will have a couple opportunities coming up to make a statement. The postseason will require them to defeat teams capable of exploiting their weaknesses.
The Steelers' offense has several productive pieces, and Barnwell noted that much of the unit has played at a high level. However, he also identified concerns with DK Metcalf's production and Troy Fautanu's transition to left tackle after playing right tackle in 2025. On defense, Pittsburgh's front seven has often helped cover for weaknesses in the secondary.

Those concerns help explain why the Steelers have been linked to potential additions before the deadline. Another receiver could provide Aaron Rodgers with a more reliable target, while a defensive back could offer additional depth against better passing attacks. However, finding a player who fills a need is not the same as finding a player who changes a team's ceiling.
Pittsburgh could surrender valuable draft capital for a receiver or defensive back and still face the same fundamental questions about its ability to compete with the AFC's best teams. Unless an acquisition offers a clear upgrade, the cost might outweigh the potential benefit. That does not mean Khan should refuse to consider every available deal. A reasonably priced player who addresses a clear weakness could still make sense, particularly if the Steelers believe he can contribute beyond this season.
Pittsburgh must also weigh the value of retaining its draft picks. Those selections could help the organization address long-term needs and develop younger players rather than relying on short-term solutions. With Rodgers providing a veteran presence at quarterback, the Steelers have an opportunity to compete now, but that does not automatically make every available trade worthwhile.
Ultimately, it will be a difficult decision for Khan and Head Coach Mike McCarthy. The Steelers have earned their 6-2 record, and they should not be dismissed simply because their schedule has not provided many opportunities to prove themselves against contenders. At the same time, their record alone should not force the organization into a move it would otherwise avoid.
The Steelers have enough talent to remain competitive in the AFC North, but whether they can make a deep playoff run remains an open question. If Khan identifies a realistic trade target who can make a meaningful difference, Pittsburgh should consider the opportunity. If the available options require giving up significant assets for only a marginal improvement, patience may be the better choice.
Pittsburgh should not confuse being a winning team with being one major trade away from becoming a championship contender. The Steelers have an opportunity to prove Barnwell wrong on the field, but they do not necessarily need to make a splash at the deadline to do it.
