Steelers' Omar Khan Told To Get Uncomfortable And Give Fans What They Truly Deserve

The Pittsburgh Steelers' general manager, Omar Khan, has promised fans he won't jeopardize the organization's future, but he will always do whatever it takes to improve a team during a competitive season. At 6-2, the Steelers are widely considered one of the NFL's top 10 teams, and expectations are rising throughout Pittsburgh. However, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly believes Khan owes it to the fans to get uncomfortable during what could be Aaron Rodgers' final ride. The message is simple: Pittsburgh might not get another opportunity quite like this one.

Steelers General Manager Omar Khan looks on as the team sets up in front of fans to workout at the annual Friday Night Lights training camp practice in Latrobe, PA.

The Steelers have won four consecutive games entering their bye week, and Mike McCarthy has given the organization a legitimate reason to believe something special could happen. Rodgers has brought experience and leadership to the offense, while Pittsburgh's defense continues to create problems for opponents. However, there are still questions surrounding the wide receiver position and whether the secondary has enough depth. Khan has an opportunity to address those concerns before they become bigger problems.

Pittsburgh has frequently been connected to potential wide receiver acquisitions, but the organization must determine how much draft capital it is willing to sacrifice. Khan has worked to protect the Steelers' long-term outlook, and that philosophy deserves respect. Nevertheless, Kaboly recently offered a compelling argument for why Pittsburgh's front office might need to approach this particular season differently. He believes the Steelers cannot afford to become so focused on tomorrow that they overlook what is happening today.

"Tomorrow, even though you have to keep an eye on it, isn't promised, and the Steelers' decision-makers have to act accordingly," Kaboly said. "If it takes giving up a little more than you might feel comfortable with in terms of a draft pick to acquire a receiver, or a depth corner, for that matter, then so be it."

That is a powerful message because it challenges the philosophy that has guided so many of Pittsburgh's personnel decisions. The Steelers have spent years trying to remain competitive without sacrificing their future. However, there is a difference between protecting an organization and becoming overly cautious when a legitimate opportunity presents itself.

Kaboly took his argument even further, suggesting Khan has responsibilities that extend beyond maintaining the organization's future draft capital.

"Omar Khan needs to worry about tomorrow ... well, tomorrow," Kaboly said. "He owes that to the fans, the owner, the players, and himself."

That final sentence might be the most important part of Kaboly's entire assessment. The Steelers aren't simply trying to build a respectable football team. They are attempting to compete for championships, and their fan base has waited a long time to celebrate another Super Bowl victory.

There is also an obligation to the players currently giving everything they have to make this season successful.

Steelers Must Decide How Aggressive Omar Khan Should Be

The interesting part of Kaboly's argument is that he isn't necessarily demanding a blockbuster trade. His comments specifically mention acquiring a receiver or additional cornerback depth, two areas where Pittsburgh could benefit from reinforcements. The challenge is identifying the right player without disrupting what McCarthy has already established.

A wide receiver capable of creating separation could give Rodgers another dependable option. Likewise, an experienced cornerback could provide valuable insurance if Pittsburgh encounters injuries during the second half of the season. Neither addition guarantees a championship, but both could strengthen the roster for a potential postseason run.

Khan deserves credit for helping construct a team that has reached 6-2. However, the Steelers' strong start also creates additional expectations. The decisions Pittsburgh makes now could determine whether this season becomes another respectable playoff appearance or something considerably more memorable.

Kaboly's message isn't that the Steelers should abandon their future. It's that they should recognize the opportunity directly in front of them. Sometimes, the difference between a good general manager and a championship-winning one comes down to knowing when taking a calculated risk is necessary.
