The Pittsburgh Steelers could be approaching a critical decision at wide receiver, and a potential trade for Indianapolis Colts standout Josh Downs may be closer than ever. With the NFL trade deadline approaching, Pittsburgh is reportedly among the finalists pursuing the young receiver, and the asking price may finally be coming into focus.

According to NFL insider Evan Sidery, the Colts have received trade offers involving a 2027 fourth-round pick, with both the Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs among the teams still in contention to acquire Downs.

“The Colts have trade offers of a 2027 4th-round pick on the table for Josh Downs, The Chiefs and Steelers are among the finalists, and a Downs deal is expected to happen tomorrow,” Sidery reported.

For Pittsburgh, this could represent an opportunity to address one of its most persistent offensive concerns without surrendering a premium draft selection. The Steelers have explored several potential receiver additions ahead of the deadline, but Downs has emerged as a particularly intriguing option because of his ability to operate out of the slot and create separation underneath.

The reported price is also considerably more manageable than the third-round selection Indianapolis had previously been seeking. If the Colts are now willing to accept a fourth-round pick, general manager Omar Khan has a decision to make about whether Downs is worth pursuing before another contender gets him.

However, there is an important complication for Pittsburgh. The Steelers do not own their original 2027 fourth-round pick, having dealt it to Dallas as part of the Broderick Jones trade. That means Pittsburgh may need to find another way to match or improve upon the reported offer rather than simply handing Indianapolis its own fourth-rounder.

The possibility of Kansas City landing Downs adds another layer of urgency. The Chiefs have their own reasons to pursue receiving help, and Pittsburgh cannot assume it will win the competition simply because the Colts have reportedly lowered their asking price.

Steelers Could Give Aaron Rodgers The Slot Receiver That He Needs

The appeal of Downs goes beyond the fact that he may be available for a Day 3 draft selection. Pittsburgh needs to determine whether adding another receiver could make a meaningful difference for Aaron Rodgers and the offense during the second half of the season.

DK Metcalf remains the Steelers' primary outside receiving threat, but the offense could benefit from another reliable option capable of consistently getting open. Downs has built his reputation as a quick, technically sound route runner who can find openings underneath and give his quarterback a dependable target when defenses focus on taking away the deeper passing game.

That skill set could complement Metcalf rather than duplicate what Pittsburgh already has. Downs can work from the slot, create separation on shorter routes and give Rodgers another option when the offense needs to move the chains. His presence could also force opposing defenses to account for another receiver instead of concentrating so heavily on Metcalf.

Downs has already demonstrated that he can produce at the NFL level. Since entering the league as a third-round pick in 2023, he has established himself as a productive target for Indianapolis. He has recorded 26 receptions for 307 yards through seven games this season, although he has yet to consistently turn those opportunities into touchdowns.

For the Steelers, that contract situation deserves attention. Acquiring Downs would give Pittsburgh a potential immediate contributor, but the team would also have to decide whether it wants to pursue a longer-term agreement. Trading for a receiver who could become a free agent after the season carries some risk, particularly if the team has to offer more than the current reported price.

There is also no guarantee that Downs would immediately transform the offense. Pittsburgh would need to integrate him into its passing game, establish his role and determine how he fits alongside Metcalf and the other receivers already on the roster.

Still, the opportunity to add a proven slot option for a relatively modest draft investment is worth considering. If the Steelers believe Downs can become a consistent contributor, this could be the type of move that strengthens the offense without sacrificing a major piece of their future.

The reported timeline makes the situation especially important. With a deal expected as soon as Monday, Pittsburgh may not have much time to decide whether to make a stronger offer or risk watching Kansas City secure another weapon.

The Steelers have made it clear through their reported interest that they are exploring ways to improve the receiver room. Now, the question is whether Khan believes Downs is the right fit at the right price.

If Indianapolis is prepared to accept a fourth round-level offer, Pittsburgh has a legitimate opportunity to add another weapon for Rodgers. But with the Steelers potentially needing to get creative with their draft compensation, the final decision could come down to how strongly the organization believes Downs can help its offense now and in the future.
