"When you look at the past history of this game, it hasn't been pretty for us," quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said of the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
He had just been asked what the key was to keeping a week to week approach, and perhaps this was a call back to the week leading up to the divisional playoff game against the Jaguars in 2018. When even Steelers head coach, Mike Tomlin was making comments that seemingly had him looking past Jacksonville to an AFC Championship rematch against the New England Patriots. The whole team certainly learned the hard way that it's better to put your money where your mouth is than stick your whole foot in there.
Now, the 9-0 Steelers are preparing to go into an away game against a team who has always given them a hard time. But keeping that perfect record isn't the priority.
"The goal isn't to go undefeated, the goal is to win a Super Bowl. We're just going one week at a time. We're not worried about anything other than this week," Roethlisberger added.
The turnaround between Week 11 and Week 12 will be a short one, though. And the Steelers will have limited time to wrap their minds around a rematch against division rivals Baltimore Ravens on Thanksgiving night just four days after the game in Jacksonville. Their undefeated record complemented by the woes of fellow AFC North competitors has put them in a position to possibly clinch the division on Thanksgiving.
But again.
One week at a time.
And this week the team is preparing for the Jaguars.
When asked if they have any extra focus because of how they've struggled against them, Roethlisberger said,
"Extra motivation, whatever you wanna call it, you know, we're not taking these guys lightly because they've had our number."
Pittsburgh will need whatever it takes to play their best, even if it's to beat a 1-9 team.
