New Faces, Creative Ideas, And Fresh Blood

The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially parted ways with offensive coordinator, Randy Fichtner.

I guess that's former offensive coordinator now. Much to the delight of all of Pittsburgh.

Fichtner is gone.

The offensive coordinator position left vacant.

And plenty of opinions on who should fill it remain.

But I don't think it should be Matt Canada.

Or anyone already in the Steelers' organization.

They have a history of promoting from within instead of looking anywhere else. And while that loyalty is...admirable...it has also proven detrimental.

Fichtner had no business running an offense. And Canada, though he hasn't done anything wrong, has not proven he's worth taking that same kind of risk on. They need some new faces, creative ideas, and fresh blood on the payroll to bring some energy and life to the offense. I just don't think they're getting that with an inside hire.

Besides, Canada is in Miami interviewing for the offensive coordinator position for the Miami Dolphins. They invited him to attend the interview. And he accepted. Not a good sign for those holding their breath he may take the vacant position left by Fichtner.

The offense as it stands is boring, stale, and ineffective. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be another year older, the line was weak to begin with, and plenty of guys are going to leave in free agency or retirement, and the running game was...weak. That's putting it kindly.

If Roethlisberger returns for one more run at a championship, they're going to need energy. Energy only a new hire will be able to bring. It is apparent the message being delivered in the locker room is falling on deaf ears. Maybe a new voice with a new message will translate better. And it isn't like there's a shortage of options.

The Steelers will have to make a decision, presumably soon. But I sure hope it's one that resides outside of the black and gold.

They could use some outsider perspective right now.
