Steelers Cornerback Named As A Likely Trade Target For The Detroit Lions

One of the Pittsburgh Steelers' biggest flaws during the 2022 season was their cornerbacks. The group was led by the likes of Cameron Sutton and Ahkello Witherspoon. Both of them are not with the Steelers anymore. With that, this offseason, the team decided to revamp the position. The first big name they decided to bring in was future Hall of Famer, Patrick Peterson. Although he is 32 years old, his play is still at an all-time high. In 2022, he was able to record his career-high 66 total tackles in the season, as well as gaining five interceptions. But he was mainly brought into the organization to be a mentor to the two new draft picks the Steelers selected.

Former Minnesota Vikings cornerback Patrick Peterson (#7) will become a mentor for a relatively young Steelers secondary in 2023.

The Steelers were able to get Joey Porter Jr. and Cory Trice Jr. during the 2023 NFL Draft. Porter was someone that many fans had wanted ever since he declared. His father Joey Porter Sr. was a great linebacker for the Steelers which made his son an immediate fan favorite. However, his play backs up his name. He is a hard-hitting cornerback that can sometimes go off the rails, much like his father would. He was the perfect fit to help command this defense.

Trice is a guy that the Steelers weren't expecting to be able to get in the seventh round of the draft. He was a projected third and fourth-round prospect, so when he fell into the Steelers' lap, they had to jump on him. He has the size of a safety, but plays like a cornerback. This makes him great in coverage and could make him the steal of the draft.

Steelers Have Brought In Some Talent To The CB Position

Another cornerback the Steelers have on their roster is Levi Wallace. He signed with the team during the 2022 offseason. During his time with the Buffalo Bills, before he was with the Steelers, he was a solid rotational guy. Now that the Steelers have brought in some talent to the position, Wallace's playing time could get cut short. Recently ProFootballNetwork.com (PFN) made an article saying that he could be a perfect trade candidate for the Detroit Lions. If this were to happen, he would be reunited with Sutton who signed with the team this offseason. PFN stated that since they have depth at the position, that the Steelers should trade him before his contract is up next offseason.

"Levi Wallace may no longer be in the Steelers’ plans after they signed Patrick Peterson and drafted fellow cornerback Joey Porter Jr. at the top of the second round. Given that Wallace is scheduled to hit free agency next offseason, Pittsburgh could aim to get something in return for him now, rather than lose him next year for nothing. Wallace isn’t a world-beater, but he was a 45-game starter for the Bills from 2019-21 before joining the Steelers last offseason. Wallace could offer the Lions much-needed depth, and Pittsburgh might be willing to part ways for a Day 3 pick."

If the Steelers were to trade Wallace, it could open up another spot on the Steelers roster. One of the positions they could look to improve upon is at running back. They already have a great pairing of Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren, but they should look to get a solid third guy. There are many great options out there like James Robinson who would be a low-cost option to fill that hole. They could also look at getting draft capital, as well as bring in another cornerback if this trade were to occur.
