Pittsburgh Steelers fans might soon be getting an inside look at their team's storied history, and I don't mean in the style of HBO's Hard Knocks or an inside look at the current team. But rather a documentary or a documentary series directed by Pittsburgh native Antoine Fuqua. He recently directed a 10-part documentary series on the entire history of the Los Angeles Lakers, and now according to ClutchPoints, his hometown Steelers will be the subject of his next project.

Sports documentaries have always been successful, that's why Hard Knocks has been such a giant success since the show first debuted in 2001. When the world shut down in the Spring of 2020, everyone was glued to their couch every week to watch the newest episode of The Last Dance, which followed Michael Jordan and his career with the Chicago Bulls. Now, Netflix's documentary about Johnny Manziel is being talked about all over the internet. Sports documentaries are always interesting to people, and they are always largely successful. Now, there is a chance we will be able to tune into one about the history of our beloved Steelers.

Fuqua has had a very successful career in film as both a director and executive producer. Perhaps he is best known for directing the 2001 crime-thriller Training Day, or his wildly successful trilogy starring Denzel Washington, The Equalizer. While he is an established and renowned director, he also likes to shoot documentaries, especially about sports. He executive produced a documentary in 2016 that was about the 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates who wound up winning the World Series.

He continued his career as a documentarian in 2022, when he directed and produced Legacy: The True Story of the LA Lakers. The documentary was released in 10 parts, and covered the entirety of the history of the Lakers. The series started with the purchase of the Lakers by Jerry Buss and continued all the way through the 2020 NBA season that was hit by the pandemic.

Fuqua has directed many other movies and works of filmography. He directed Southpaw in 2015, The Magnificent Seven in 2016, and Shooter in 2007. He also has the experience being in charge of sports-related documentaries. He had the documentaries about the Pirates and the Lakers, and he also had one where the subject was legendary boxer, Muhammad Ali. His experience combined with his fandom for Pittsburgh sports would make a great documentary that football fans everywhere would enjoy.

What Would A Steelers Documentary Look Like?

Fuqua has yet to say whether or not his plans for this documentary would have it being in the format of a movie or a series. Fuqua has many options for which era of Steelers history. The most obvious choice would be when the Steelers franchise had its most success, which would be the 1970s. The documentary could focus on Terry Bradshaw and Chuck Noll as well as Joe Greene and the rest of the Steel Curtain. The group won four Super Bowls together, and the team had many Hall of Fame players on it.

Another option for the documentary could be based on the Steelers of the 21st century. Mainly focused on the time after Ben Roethlisberger was drafted through now. The team saw success in this time, winning two Super Bowls and playing in three. Many great players were on the Steelers, and the rise and fall of the "Killer B's" would be an interesting topic. Le'Veon Bell's holdout and everything that has happened with Antonio Brown would keep the attention of every football fan.

Fuqua said he plans to cover the Steelers in a similar way that he did the Lakers - which would be from the start until the present day. I'd imagine the Rooneys would be an obvious focal point of the documentary as well as the continued success of the organization, having been dominant in multiple decades.
