Steelers' Matt Canada Revealing That Kenny Pickett Changed Plays "Multiple Times" In Week 5

The Pittsburgh Steelers have magically managed to get themselves into a 3-2 record and in first place in the AFC North going into Week 6 (which also happens to be their bye week). The team's constant struggles on offense and mediocre play make you think that they are a one-win team, but that is not the case. Now that they have some free time on their hands, they should be looking to make improvements and get the team where they need to be. Most of that will come down to Head Coach Mike Tomlin and the rest of his staff.

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin roams the grounds and talks with his players at St. Vincent College during 2022 training camp in Latrobe, PA.

The main issue that fans, media, and even some players have with this team is with their Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada. From the team's kicker Chris Boswell giving Canada a piece of his mind, to fans breaking out "Fire Canada" chants at the Pittsburgh Penguins home opener, the entire city of Pittsburgh has come to hate this one man.

It is not that they really hate Canada as a man, more or less his coaching styles and how awful this offense has played despite being supposedly good. Right now, they average 12.6 points per game and have a negative 31-point differential in games. In a season where many hoped that this offense would take a step forward from last season and put their name in the conversation for one of the best offenses in the league, they have done anything but that.

The Steelers Offense Has Looked Awful Recently

The one sign of life has come with quarterback Kenny Pickett, who is slowly getting his groove back. The most notable thing that everyone has noticed with Pickett is the way that he has taken command of this offense. He was the main reason the team scored the game-winner against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5. He called an audible that essentially set up the game-winning touchdown from George Pickens.

Although this seemed like a rarity of Pickett changing Canada's play-calling, it may have been happening more than you think. Recently, Canada was talking to the press on Wednesday and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette picked up him saying that Pickett changed multiple play calls in Week 5 alone. But Canada did not seem to be disappointed in this fact as he seemed to give the quarterback some praise.

"Kenny did a great job, but he probably did that three or four times throughout the game." Canada then said, "We did that last year, he made those adjustments last year and it happened multiple times in that game."

This kind of leadership in big moments during crucial times is what makes good quarterbacks great. It is why Steelers' legends Ben Roethlisberger and Terry Bradshaw were so dominant during their time with the organization. Right now, Pickett is not at the status of either one of them, but the guts he has in crunch time can make him an elite quarterback in the NFL.

It is going to take more than Pickett being clutch if the Steelers want to be a playoff team, but it helps a ton. Taking command and leadership like this shows growth. As the old saying goes, you're not a Steeler until you beat the Ravens. Well, Pickett has shown that he wants to be a Steeler for a while since he has been dominant against them.

With the Steelers in their bye week this week, fans are not asking for drastic changes, but rather just get the team back on the right track. If that is going to happen, Pickett, Tomlin, and Canada all need to sit down and have a conversation on how they can right this ship to make them a competitive team again.

So, what do you think Steeler Nation? Are you more comfortable with Pickett making his own play changes to Canada's play-calling? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
