Fillipponi's criticism stems from Trubisky's contract extension on May 18, 2023, which secured his services for an additional two years at a cost of $11.25 million. This extension positioned Trubisky as the highest-paid backup quarterback in the NFL, a move that raised eyebrows, especially in light of widespread calls for Trubisky to be replaced by Mason Rudolph.
