Steelers' Christian Kuntz Detailed 1 Of The Biggest No-No's For Training Camp: "I Think We'd Be Cut"

The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for 2024 training camp starting next week. The team will be back in Latrobe, Pennsylvania to prepare for the upcoming season, and that includes the specialists. Christian Kuntz will have to use all that training camp time to gain some familiarity with his new holder, Cameron Johnston. Kuntz, Chris Boswell, and Pressley Harvin III made an elite field goal unit, and that hopefully stays the same with Johnston. However, it's not all just excitement for the new season for Kuntz, as he will be sharing a room with someone else.

Pittsburgh Steelers long snapper Christian Kuntz has been a rare consistency for the 2023 Steelers during a challenging season.

On the debut episode of The Christian Kuntz Podcast, Kuntz mentioned that he will be getting married very soon. He and his co-hosts joked about having his honeymoon at training camp, but in the end, it was just that, a joke. Kuntz cited a team policy stating that no one can have guests in their dorms, including the players' wives.

"I think we'd be cut. I think there's absolutely no guests in the [dorm]. None. That's got to be a universal rule around the league. I'm sure that guys have done it before and might have gotten away with it, might have not and brushed it under the rug, but for us, no."

That must be rough for Kuntz to go from his wedding, to immediately leaving his wife at home for five weeks while he works on snapping the ball to Johnston. Even if that could be considered poor planning, it still won't be fun. Now would be the perfect time for the honeymoon, but instead, he has to worry about leaving her back where they usually live so he can keep his job.

Steelers long snapper Christian Kuntz (#46) prepares to snap the football during warmups prior to a 2021 regular season game in Pittsburgh, PA.

Despite signing a three-year contract in the 2024 offseason, Kuntz could still easily be cut with very little dead cap attributed to the Steelers. Not only does he have to be perfect on the field, but he has to follow every rule in fear of losing his job altogether. He knows that if he takes one wrong step, there will be numerous players lining up to take his spot.

How Does The Steelers' Policy Affect Other Players?

Obviously, not every player can be cut as easily as Kuntz. TJ Watt is the team's MVP, as well as the highest-paid player on the team. There is no way that he would get cut or traded if he brought his wife into his dorm. A suspension may not even be on the table. At the worst, he would most likely get a fine that correlates with his contract and a reprimand to never do it again.

Meanwhile, a fringe player like Justin Fields could be suspended. Even though he will most likely be the backup quarterback throughout the season, they could make him a healthy scratch similar to Kenny Pickett near the end of the 2023 season. The punishment for bringing someone into the dorms most likely depends on how valuable they are, and how replaceable.

What do you think about the Steelers' super-strict policy preventing Kuntz from even inviting his soon-to-be newlywed wife to visit him in Latrobe? What do you think would happen if any player broke this rule? Let us know in the comments below.
