The Pittsburgh Steelers have had Head Coach Mike Tomlin at the helm since the 2007 season. In his 17 seasons as head coach, Tomlin has never experienced a losing season—a remarkable feat in the highly competitive NFL. However, despite his success, some fans have grown frustrated with perceived mediocrity, even placing the blame on Tomlin.

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin discusses a taunting penalty with former team wide receiver, Diontae Johnson.

Tomlin is widely regarded as one of the top coaches in the league, with many in the national media considering him one of the greatest of all-time. This reputation is well-deserved, as Tomlin is a remarkable leader with a unique ability to motivate and inspire his players. Although he hasn't won a playoff game since the 2016 season, the Steelers extended his contract after the 2023 season, underscoring the high regard in which the organization still holds him.

Tomlin’s players love playing for him, and many are eager to sing his praises. Rising star Nick Herbig recently joined the Steel Here podcast with Kevin Adams and Jersey Jerry, where he shared some hilarious stories about Tomlin's motivational tactics. Herbig also made it clear that Tomlin is his favorite coach he has ever played for.

"Like no disrespect to any of the coaches that I have played with before, but Mike T. is definitely my favorite. He’s the best and he’s very good at what he does."

Adams mentioned that he had heard Tomlin isn’t afraid to get tough with his players when necessary, asking Herbig if Tomlin ever gets in his face and really chews players out. Herbig's response was both candid and amusing.

With a grin, Herbig shared that while Tomlin can certainly dish out tough love, it’s always done with a purpose.

"Oh, all the time. I like that because that gets me going. I think that’s what makes him such a great coach. He’s not so much nitpicking what you did wrong and what you did right. He knows how to motivate you. He knows what buttons to press. He’ll press buttons and he will get you fired up. He will get you going."

According to Herbig, Tomlin’s ability to balance discipline with levity is one of the many reasons the players respect and enjoy playing for him.

He went on to say that while Tomlin might occasionally get in a player's face, it’s always to bring out the best in them, and it’s clear that Tomlin's words resonate deeply with the team. The best part about Herbig's revelation was how Tomlin will get in players faces to talk trash.

"Like he will call you out in team meetings. He will put a clip of you getting embarrassed and just talk sh**, like that’s not a good feeling. You know you are sitting there in front of the whole team and it’s like da**, okay. I love that about Mike T."

Herbig is one of many players who thrive under Tomlin's unique coaching style. It’s this distinctive approach that makes Tomlin so respected across the league, with many players eager to play for him.

He’s not just a special coach but also a remarkable person, and the Steelers feel fortunate to have him leading the team.
