The Pittsburgh Steelers selected an under-the-radar guard, Mason McCormick, in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. McCormick flew under the radar largely because he played college football at South Dakota State. However, scouts were impressed by his ability to elevate his game when facing tougher competition.

There’s a lot of excitement about McCormick’s long-term potential, but many fans didn’t expect to see much of him on the offensive line during his rookie season. While Isaac Seumalo has been sidelined due to injury, there’s a chance he could return to the starting lineup for Week 4 against the Indianapolis Colts.
If Seumalo isn’t ready to return, one Steelers insider believes McCormick could step into a starting role. Ray Fittipaldo shared that McCormick has earned significant trust within the organization, a promising development considering most didn’t expect him to be integrated this quickly. This speaks volumes about how well McCormick has performed in practice, making his potential start even more exciting.
"If Seumalo does not play, I think we'll see even more of McCormick. I wouldn't be surprised if he started," said Fittipaldo.
During a recent chat, a reader asked Fittipaldo whether it would make more sense for the Steelers to start McCormick over Spencer Anderson. The reasoning wasn’t due to Anderson’s performance—he's actually played well—but rather his current role as the backup swing tackle.

The reader argued that the Steelers should prioritize protecting Anderson from injury, given his importance as a versatile backup. Fittipaldo responded to the question by sharing his own insights on the matter.
"That's a very good point. They'll play the best player, but like I said earlier, don't be surprised if McCormick starts."
During Week 3, McCormick made his offensive debut, playing 12 snaps at left guard while rotating with Anderson. He also contributed 13 snaps as an extra offensive lineman. Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin suggested during his Tuesday press conference that rotating guards between Anderson and McCormick will likely continue.
Pro Football Focus awarded McCormick an impressive 82.6 pass-blocking grade for his debut. However, he faced challenges with his run blocking, receiving a grade of just 52. Overall, McCormick earned a 57.2 rating for his performance, which was notably higher than Anderson’s, particularly in pass protection.
Steelers' Mason McCormick Earning Trust As A Rookie
McCormick is an exciting prospect known for his relentless work ethic. Tomlin appreciates the infectious energy he brings to the offensive line, emphasizing that it sets a positive tone for the entire group. The Steelers seem to have found a gem in McCormick, and as he gains more playing time, fans are eager to see him fulfill the promise he’s shown.

McCormick is expected to start or earn increased playing time against the Colts, and Steelers fans are optimistic about his potential impact on the offensive line. Pittsburgh plays a very physical style of football, and while the offense hasn't yet exploded for points, it has been effective in controlling games and maintaining a sense of comfort on the field.
They will need the offensive line to play even better as the season goes on. With McCormick poised to take on a larger role this Sunday, there’s a growing anticipation that he could become a significant contributor to the team’s success.
