The Pittsburgh Steelers have been on the hunt for help at the wide receiver position ever since they made the move to trade Diontae Johnson early in the 2024 offseason. Many fans have expressed concern about the wide receiver room, and those concerns seemed valid through the first six weeks when Justin Fields was at the helm.

Steelers' Russell Wilson drops back to pass during a Sunday Night Football game against the New York Jets.
However, with Russell Wilson back and healthy, the wide receiver room isn't looking that unproductive after all. This newfound optimism only intensifies fans' passion for General Manager Omar Khan to make a trade happen at wide receiver to improve the offense.
As the trade deadline approaches, speculation is swirling around potential acquisitions that could bolster the Steelers' receiving corps. With Wilson's leadership, there’s a renewed sense of urgency to enhance the passing game, making it crucial for the front office to act swiftly.
Steelers insider Brian Batko shared three names he thinks the Steelers should consider trading for, highlighting players who could elevate the team's aerial attack. Each option brings unique skills that could complement the existing roster and create a more dynamic offense.

Steelers General Manager Omar Khan picks up the phone in the team's war room during the 2023 NFL Draft weekend.
With the pressure mounting, it's clear that Khan's decisions in the coming days will be pivotal in shaping the Steelers' playoff hopes as they seek to find the right fit in their wide receiver room.
1.) Tyquan Thornton
"This one’s more of a dart throw than anything given that he’s barely done anything in three years since being a second-round pick in 2022," Batko said. "But he was drafted that high because he’s 6-foot-3, ran a 4.28-second 40-yard dash and had a productive senior year at Baylor. The Patriots aren’t using him much, and he’s still on his rookie deal."
The first name Batko mentioned was Thornton. He acknowledged that this option is more of a low-risk gamble that likely won’t resolve the wide receiver issue entirely.
While Batko believes Thornton could be worth a minor risk, he doesn’t think the addition would significantly impact the team's performance. However, he's still a legit option.
2.) Jakobi Meyers
"Only 27 and also has two years left on his deal, so even at 2-6, the Raiders might not want to move him," Batko wrote. "But he’s 6-foot-2, has put up consistent production over the past four years and has played both in the slot and out wide in his career."
Meyers is a name that would be a significant acquisition for the Steelers. He has demonstrated his productivity as a wide receiver and would immediately enhance the Steelers' offense.
However, with the Las Vegas Raiders recently trading Davante Adams, it raises the question of whether they would be willing to part with their next best receiver.
3.) Adam Thielen
"Another bigger body to add to the group at 6-foot-2, plenty of experience at age 34 and versatility as an inside or outside receiver," Batko said. "But after turning back the clock with 1,000 yards last season, he only played in three games this year before going on injured reserve with a hamstring issue."
Thielen is undoubtedly an intriguing name, having surfaced in trade rumors a couple of times during the 2024 season. At 34 years old, he carries a substantial contract with the Carolina Panthers, and his struggles with health throughout much of the year pose a risk.
However, with the Steelers in win-now mode, reworking a team-friendly deal with Thielen could make sense if he can contribute on the field. Taking that gamble might be worth it for a chance to bolster their offense.
Steelers' Passing Game Is Starting To Heat Up
The Steelers have witnessed Van Jefferson and Calvin Austin III stepping up since Wilson became their quarterback. The passing game has opened up significantly, making the situation feel much less dire. At 6-2, the Steelers are starting to recognize that they have a well-rounded team, especially as other contenders make bold trades for star wide receivers.

Given this context, the Steelers would be wise to explore all options, particularly at wide receiver. As the trade deadline approaches, all eyes will be on Khan and the organization to see if they can make a strategic move to enhance the roster.
