The Pittsburgh Steelers' Week 11 18-16 victory over the Baltimore Ravens had some interesting storylines. One of the most intriguing was the return of former Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson. The Steelers traded Johnson to the Carolina Panthers during the 2024 offseason, but he found himself back in the AFC North after a midseason trade to the Ravens.

Johnson hasn't been a significant factor in Baltimore's offense, and in the lead-up to this matchup, Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin notably refrained from offering any praise for his former player. Tomlin took a slight shot at Johnson stating that the Ravens had several other playmakers who are better.

After the game, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Brian Batko asked Johnson about his emotions returning to the Steel City. Johnson shared that Tomlin had a message for him before the game.

"He told me to keep going, keep my head up, that he missed me and stuff," Johnson said while laughing. "It’s all love when I see him or anyone over there. They did nothing but show me love when I was here."

When the Steelers decided to trade Johnson, reports surfaced suggesting that the organization didn’t enjoy having him around due to the headaches he allegedly caused. While some questioned the validity of these reports, one thing was clear: the Steelers traded him for a reason.

Tomlin’s comments leading up to the game only fueled speculation, with many wondering if he intentionally took a subtle jab at his former wide receiver. At the very least, he made no effort to publicly support him.

It’s cool to hear that Tomlin spoke to Johnson and shared that they missed him. Despite the drama surrounding his departure, Johnson played a significant role in the Steelers’ offensive success during his time in Pittsburgh. His contributions were undeniable, even if his exit was marked by lingering tensions.

Johnson undoubtedly caused some frustrations during his time in Pittsburgh, and Steeler Nation made those feelings known at times. Still, seeing him suit up for the Ravens isn’t ideal, as his talent is undeniable. While his opportunities in Baltimore have been limited, Johnson remains optimistic and focused on making the most of the chances he gets. So far, however, the results haven’t materialized.

In three games with the Ravens, Johnson has managed just three catches for 23 yards. His first visit to Acrisure Stadium as a member of the opposing team added a unique layer to the experience.

Johnson shared what it felt like to be on the visitor’s side of the field—a perspective he admitted was strange after years of calling Pittsburgh home.

"It was very different," Johnson said. "Coming into the away locker room and just going out that tunnel — the walk is long. I didn't know the walk is that long."

Steelers' Offense Will Look To Get Back On Track Against The Browns

It seems clear that Johnson misses Pittsburgh and wishes he were still part of the team. Meanwhile, the Steelers improved to 8-2 on the season, despite their offense struggling in Week 11 and failing to score a touchdown. They’ll look to rebound on Thursday Night Football against the Cleveland Browns as they aim to keep their momentum alive.

Despite the trade, it’s evident that Tomlin still holds Johnson in high regard, and it’s interesting to hear about their pre and postgame conversations. Ultimately, the Steelers sent their former wide receiver home with a divisional loss—a reminder of just how strong this Pittsburgh team has become.
