The Pittsburgh Steelers have a critical decision to make after the 2024 season at the quarterback position. With both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields on the roster, the team must determine their long-term direction under center. While both quarterbacks are signed for the 2024 season, extending either will require a significant financial investment. Reports indicate mutual interest between the Steelers and Wilson in a long-term deal, but the situation remains far from settled.

NFL insider Albert Breer recently shed light on the complexities of the Steelers' decision-making process. Breer suggested that while Wilson’s veteran leadership and proven track record make him a compelling choice, his age and the high price tag could deter the Steelers from committing to a long-term contract. On the other hand, Fields represents a younger, more mobile option but has yet to fully establish himself as a consistent starter in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers’ decision will not only impact their immediate future but also shape the team's identity for years to come. Whether they choose the experienced Wilson, bet on Fields’ potential, or explore other options entirely, the choice carries enormous implications. With fans and analysts closely watching, the organization faces mounting pressure to get this pivotal decision right.

"My guess would be in the case of Wilson, if he plays well and Pittsburgh makes a nice playoff run, then there may be enough of a divide in a negotiation that the Steelers could let him hit the market and ask him to give them the right to match whatever is out there," Breer said. "Meanwhile, I’d think Fields would be looking for a Sam Darnold type of shot to start somewhere on a one-year deal."

Breer believes a potential divide could emerge in negotiations if Wilson continues his strong play, driving up his value and making it difficult for Pittsburgh to secure a team-friendly deal.

He also provided valuable insight, noting that both Mike Tomlin and Arthur Smith see a bright future for Fields, further complicating the Steelers' decision-making process.

"This much I can say, Mike Tomlin and Arthur Smith have gotten Wilson to a place where they can be blunt and honest with him, and they have a blueprint that works for everyone now," Breer said. "And both those guys believe Fields has a bright future, and want to keep working with him too. So it’ll be interesting to see how this all looks in another three-and-a-half months."

Complicating the situation is Pittsburgh’s longstanding organizational rule against negotiating new deals during the season. According to Breer’s sources, this policy isn’t expected to change, adding another layer of complexity to an already challenging decision.

The Steelers have a strong appreciation for both Fields and Wilson, recognizing the unique pros and cons each brings to the table. While it’s technically possible for both quarterbacks to remain in Pittsburgh, making that scenario work financially would be extremely difficult.

Steelers' Russell Wilson May Be Open To Taking Team-Friendly Deal

Tomlin and Smith are reportedly big fans of Fields, valuing his youth and raw potential as a long-term solution for the team. However, Wilson’s performance and his ability to elevate a veteran roster make a compelling case for extending his tenure for a few more seasons. Wilson, a highly competitive player, is well aware that his career is nearing its conclusion, making his next move pivotal.

Having endured a challenging stint with the Denver Broncos, Wilson likely wants to preserve the momentum and energy he’s found in Pittsburgh. Considering his immense career earnings and the financial success of his wife, Wilson may not prioritize money in his next deal. If he’s truly focused on cementing his legacy and chasing another Super Bowl, a team-friendly deal could give both him and the Steelers the best shot at long-term success.
