The Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive line was expected to be much improved in the 2024 season. Then, some key injuries really decimated the unit, and young players were thrust into action. Rookies Zach Frazier and Mason McCormick have stepped up admirably, showing promise and resilience despite being thrown into the fire early in their NFL careers. However, as the season has progressed, the challenges have mounted. Experienced pass rushers are beginning to exploit their inexperience, and the wear and tear of a long season seem to be catching up to the young linemen.

Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger recently addressed the team’s struggles on his podcast, offering insight into the offensive line’s performance amid the team’s three-game losing streak.
Roethlisberger highlighted how the rookies might be hitting a rookie wall, a common challenge for first-year players adjusting to the physical and mental demands of an extended NFL season. While acknowledging the growing pains, Roethlisberger emphasized that these struggles are part of the development process and should not overshadow the potential these young players have shown.
"I don’t understand how we are still giving up that kind of pressure," Roethlisberger said. "I mean Russ is running for his life a lot. I hate to say it, but it’s something we have talked about. When you get a lot of young guys up front and I know people are saying I’m talking out of both sides of my mouth."
Roethlisberger recently shared his thoughts on the future of the Steelers' quarterback position. He expressed support for bringing back Russell Wilson, emphasizing that he doesn’t place much blame on Wilson for the team’s struggles as of late. Roethlisberger believes Wilson has handled a challenging situation well and still has plenty to offer as a veteran presence under center.

Despite the current struggles, Roethlisberger remains optimistic about the future of the Steelers' offensive line. He pointed out that these tough experiences will ultimately benefit Frazier, McCormick, and the rest of the young linemen, providing valuable lessons that will accelerate their growth. While this season’s inconsistency is frustrating, the foundation is being laid for a stronger, more cohesive offensive line in the years to come.
"I do think they have played well for the most part this year," Roethlisberger said. "At this point in the season, they are getting worn down. You have got young guys who go from playing college, to the draft, right into the season. It’s the rookie wall. They call it that for a reason… We are starting to see that from those guys up front, but I think it’s encouraging for next year."
The rookie wall is a well-known reality in the NFL, where the physical and mental demands of a long season can take a toll on young players. For the Steelers, rookies Frazier and McCormick have provided plenty of reasons for optimism with their long-term potential. However, the offensive line has faced significant challenges beyond just inexperience. The injury to fellow rookie Troy Fautanu disrupted their plans, Broderick Jones has shown some signs of regression, and veteran James Daniels’ injury further compounded the struggles.
Steelers Must Protect Russell Wilson If They Want To Make Postseason Run
It hasn’t been smooth sailing for the Steelers' offensive line, but the rookies have been a bright spot, offering hope for the future. Despite the adversity, they’ve managed to hold their own for much of the 2024 season. Now, as the regular season nears its conclusion, Steelers fans are hoping the unit can regroup, find consistency, and finish strong heading into the playoffs.

For Wilson and the Steelers' offense to thrive in the postseason, improved protection up front will be essential. If the line can tighten up and the rookies can push through their growing pains, the Steelers could still make a meaningful run in January.
