Fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers anxiously awaited the appearance of Head Coach Mike Tomlin at his final press conference of the 2024 season on Tuesday. The team's leader had plenty to discuss with reporters, leaving for several different talking points and even more questions. A five-game losing streak to end the year, including a playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens, sparked an outrage throughout a city that has prided itself on postseason success. Changes are expected to come, but some of Tomlin's messaging during his press conference should lead to some concern overall.

After a season like the Steelers had, there are always going to be issues that become apparent if the end scene isn't a Lombardi Trophy being hoisted. Tomlin has taken a lot of heat since the Wild Card defeat at the hands of the Ravens, and deservedly so. At times, it looked like his team was giving up and simply ready to enter the offseason.
Tomlin was asked about the lack of overall success in recent seasons, and particularly regarding if his message has run its course inside Pittsburgh's locker room. In an interesting response, he noted that he isn't really interested in his messaging resonating with his team. This was a bit of a shocking answer based on recent criticism.
"I don't worry about messaging resonating," Tomlin said. "I speak with great clarity and transparency. I've learned that over a long time at this level. I know what works and what doesn't. That component of it is probably less of a concern over more strategic things and other discussions that dictate outcome. Messaging is such a small component of what it is that we do. It just really is. There's complexities to it."
Towards the end of his comments, Tomlin is referring to game-planning and other areas that go into being success at the professional level. Unfortunately, not being worried about the message that you are trying to send to players has to come off as a bit ignorant for a guy who has been leading an NFL franchise for nearly two decades. Fans would argue that his "player's coach" mentality needs to be changed in 2025 and beyond.

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin stares intensely as he watches his offense prepare to run a play during 2023 training camp at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.
Tomlin signed a three-year contract extension in the 2024 offseason, and didn't appear to act as if for one moment that he was worried about his job. He is one of the most protected coaches in sports because of how Pittsburgh tends to do business. He is extremely eloquent when speaking, and players often commend him for being a master motivator, but for Tomlin not to worry if what he says is hitting home or not, is a bit of an intriguing revelation.
The Steelers need to have a complete overhaul in a lot of areas. The expectation has become that the team will always finish above .500, making it very hard to draft a top-tier quarterback prospect. Something has to give after six-straight playoff losses, and one of those could potentially have to be Tomlin changing his ways. That will be hard to convince any coach in the NFL, let alone the one who is the longest-tenured.
The comings days and weeks will reveal a lot about the Steelers' future plans, but not too many answers were given to the fan base on Tuesday. Overall, more things were said that could cause concern, rather than optimism.

Steelers Will Have No Choice But To Part Ways With Tomlin If 2025 Ends The Same Way
Tomlin has seemingly been untouchable, but it will be impossible for ownership not to look in a different direction if the team finishes above .500 in 2025, but that proceeds to get blown out in the first round of the playoffs. Tomlin should think twice about not caring about his messaging, because it could be one of the main reasons why the locker room hasn't seemed to have the overall drive to push as hard as possible at the end of recent seasons.
