The Pittsburgh Steelers' offseason has already been eventful, and it's only getting louder. With Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in the mix, the team is expected to retain only one of them for the 2025 season. Meanwhile, the Steelers have been linked to other quarterbacks, including Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers. But on Thursday morning, a new report sent shockwaves through Steeler Nation.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence (16) looks at the sideline during a game against the Tennessee Titans Jan. 7, 2024, at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.
According to Ryan Burr, the Steelers reached out to the Jacksonville Jaguars to explore a trade for quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Burr reported that Pittsburgh was willing to offer this year’s first- and second-round picks but noted that with the 2025 NFL Draft being held in Pittsburgh, next year’s first-round pick is unlikely to be on the table. While many details remain unclear, if there’s any truth to the report, it suggests the Steelers are aggressively pursuing a major move at quarterback.
ESPN’s Michael DiRocco, who covers the Jaguars, stepped in to clarify the situation. While he didn’t deny that the Steelers reached out, he made it clear how Jacksonville reacted. According to DiRocco, the Jaguars essentially laughed Steelers General Manager Omar Khan off the phone, calling the idea ridiculous.
Regarding recent report that Steelers have inquired about a trade for Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence, a Jaguars source said there's "no chance" they'll trade Lawrence and called the idea "ridiculous."

While it’s far too early to draw any firm conclusions from these reports, one thing is clear—the Steelers, and specifically Khan, aren’t messing around. They’re aggressively exploring every option, reaching out to teams about multiple positions, with quarterback clearly at the top of their wishlist.

Quarterbacks Justin Fields and Russell Wilson sit on the bench during a regular season game for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
With both Fields and Wilson still in the mix, it’s becoming increasingly apparent that the Steelers aren’t fully satisfied with either option. Fields, however, offers more upside—he’s younger, significantly cheaper, and still developing. The logical move would be to sign him to a two-year deal at his market value, roughly $13 million per year. That’s an affordable price for a quarterback who can help the Steelers stay competitive while they continue searching for their long-term answer at the position.
The reports about Lawrence are certainly intriguing. Coming into the NFL, Lawrence was widely regarded as a franchise-altering quarterback, expected to be a generational talent. While he has shown flashes of that potential with the Jaguars, his 2024 season was a setback—injuries hampered his performance, and even when healthy, he didn’t take the expected leap forward. The idea of the Steelers giving up significant draft capital to acquire him would undoubtedly stir up mixed emotions in Pittsburgh.
Steelers' Omar Khan Is Leaving No Stone Unturned In The 2025 Offseason
Regardless of whether there’s any legitimacy to the Lawrence trade rumors, one thing is evident—the Steelers are leaving no stone unturned in their search for answers at quarterback. Khan and the front office are aggressively exploring all options, signaling that they are not content with the status quo.

With Wilson and Fields still in the mix and other names being floated, it’s clear Pittsburgh is determined to find the right long-term solution. Whether that means rolling with Fields, making a bold trade, or exploring future draft options, the Steelers are keeping every possibility on the table.
It was shocking to see reports surface that the Steelers had reached out to the Jaguars about Trevor Lawrence. If they were to actually give up significant draft capital to acquire him, it wouldn’t be seen as an immediate solution, but rather as an aggressive and desperate move to find a franchise quarterback. Whether or not Lawrence is the answer, some Steelers fans might appreciate the team’s willingness to take an unorthodox approach in their search for a long-term leader under center.
