The Pittsburgh Steelers have been linked to several wide receivers since trading away Diontae Johnson. It’s clear they are determined to find a reliable complement to George Pickens. During the 2024 offseason, Pittsburgh aggressively pursued a trade, reportedly coming very close to acquiring star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk from the San Francisco 49ers—though the deal ultimately fell through.

Another name connected to the Steelers is Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton. The primary reason is his established chemistry with Russell Wilson, along with his talent and experience, which would make him a strong complement to Pickens. The Broncos appear open to trading Sutton, adding to the speculation.

Pittsburgh remains in the market for a wide receiver, and Broncos insider Benjamin Allbright recently shared his belief that Sutton will end up in Pittsburgh. Speaking on The Big Doug & Carmi Show, Allbright provided insight into the Steelers' ongoing search for a significant upgrade at the position.

"I think Pittsburgh's looking to add a receiver, not subtract one," Allbright said. "I would not be surprised if the Broncos jettison Courtland Sutton, to see Sutton and Pickens pair up on the outside there in Pittsburgh."

Allbright’s speculation about Sutton being traded to the Steelers is based on the premise that the Broncos would first have to make him available. He knows Pittsburgh is actively searching for a wide receiver and was heavily involved in the reports surrounding a potential Aiyuk trade. Given his strong connections within the Broncos organization, his insight into the possibility of Sutton joining the Steelers in 2025 is certainly eye-opening.

Sutton, a 29-year-old wide receiver and former Pro Bowler, earned the honor in 2019 after recording 72 receptions for 1,112 yards and six touchdowns. He also had a highly productive 2023 season with Wilson as his quarterback, catching 59 passes for 772 yards and an impressive 10 touchdowns.

The Steelers’ starting quarterback for the 2025 season remains uncertain. Some believe Justin Fields is the favorite, while others think Wilson could return. If Wilson is under center, his established chemistry with Sutton would be a major advantage. If Fields wins the job, adding another playmaker to open up the offense would be equally beneficial. Regardless of who starts at quarterback, the Steelers must upgrade their wide receiver corps.

Steelers Seriously Need Help At The Wide Receiver Spot

The veteran, Sutton, has had several highly productive seasons and would be a strong complement to Pickens. Together, they could create serious problems for opposing secondaries. In 2024, Steelers fans watched as Pickens struggled to get open, with defenses easily focusing on him and taking him out of games. As talented as Pickens is, it’s difficult for a wide receiver to thrive when he’s the only real threat in the passing game.

That’s why many believe the Steelers must make a move to upgrade their wide receiver room. There is heavy speculation that they will target the position early in the 2025 NFL Draft, while also remaining active in free agency and trade discussions. Steelers fans will continue to wait and see whether the team acquires Sutton or another wide receiver before the 2025 season.
