The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly very optimistic about a new deal for Justin Fields, but it's not that simple. While Fields has emerged as the popular choice among fans and pundits due to his youth, affordability, and high upside, questions remain about his long-term fit in Pittsburgh.

With free agent quarterback Russell Wilson projected to have a high market value nearing $40 million—a price many view as an overpay—the allure of Fields, whose market value is estimated at just $6-7 million, is undeniable. Fields offers a more cost-effective option with greater long-term potential, but the Steelers must still determine if he can develop into the franchise quarterback they've been searching for. Many Steelers fans are anxiously awaiting the organization’s pending quarterback decision.

With Wilson’s high price tag making him an unappealing long-term option, fans are eager to see what Fields can do with a full season as the starter. Reports suggest there’s serious interest in Fields from other teams, leaving fans concerned that the Steelers' hesitation could lead to a bidding war, potentially causing Fields to walk. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler shed more light on the situation during his appearance on SportsCenter on Thursday morning.

"I know that there is some internal optimism or some sentiment for Justin Fields as an option as their [the Steelers] quarterback moving forward," Fowler said. "And that both sides are open to a potential deal."

Fowler provided additional insight, noting that there’s strong internal belief within the organization that a deal for Fields will get done.

While the situation is evolving quickly and could change at any moment, the Steelers currently appear focused on bringing Fields back. However, Fowler hinted that the team isn’t limiting its options to just Wilson or Fields.

"There are even some whispers around the league that maybe they'll look broader at all the quarterbacks that are available that they feel that they can help them," Fowler said. "Not just Fields or Wilson."

The 2025 free agent quarterback market is shaping up to be an interesting one. Sam Darnold boosted his stock with a strong performance during the 2024 season, though his struggles in high-pressure moments may have slightly impacted his value. Still, many view Darnold as the top quarterback available, with Fields ranked just behind him.

This ranking has Steelers fans on edge—if Fields is considered the second-best quarterback on the market and remains relatively affordable, the logical move is to lock him in now so he can fully prepare for the 2025 season. Fields showcased his potential during the 2024 season when given the opportunity to shine.

Reports surfaced that the Steelers’ brass may have been hesitant to fully trust him, limiting his opportunities. If the Steelers bring Fields back, they need to unleash his playmaking ability and allow him to operate with more freedom and aggression.

Justin Fields And The Steelers Makes The Most Sense

The Steelers have plenty of cap space to work with, giving them the flexibility to re-sign Fields and add weapons around him. Pairing another reliable wide receiver alongside George Pickens could help unlock Fields’ potential. It’s a relatively low-risk move—the quarterback market isn’t overflowing with better options, and Fields already has experience in Arthur Smith’s offensive system.

When the Steelers traded for Fields during the 2024 offseason, the market for him was lukewarm, allowing Pittsburgh to acquire him at a bargain. However, Fields improved his stock significantly during his six starts with the Steelers, drawing interest from quarterback-needy teams around the league. With reports indicating the Steelers want to bring Fields back, the growing market for him suggests they may need to act quickly before competition drives up the price.
