Steelers Reportedly Trying To Hide Their Love For 1 Quarterback Prospect

The Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback situation has been the talk of the Steel City. It all began when the Steelers decided to bring in veteran quarterback Russell Wilson on a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum before the 2024 season. Shortly after, they made an exciting trade to acquire another capable quarterback, Justin Fields. Both quarterbacks had opportunities in the 2024 season to prove their worth to the franchise, but neither did enough to truly secure their future in the Steel City.

There has been a lot of speculation about which quarterback the Steelers are favoring. Many believe it will be Fields due to his lower cost, exciting playstyle, mobility, and far more upside at this stage in his career. Wilson, on the other hand, is getting older and didn’t do enough in 2024 to help the Steelers end their playoff drought. Wilson ended the season with five straight losses.

With a weak quarterback draft class, the idea of the Steelers taking a risky early pick doesn’t seem to make sense. However, one Cleveland Browns media personality believes he knows what the Steelers' quarterback plan is. On Monday, while appearing on The Really Big Show, Tony Rizzo revealed something he has heard about the Steelers' interest in drafting Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart.

"I'm hearing the fastest-rising player, not only quarterback, in this whole process of Underwear Olympics is Jaxson Dart," Rizzo said. "Guess who likes Jaxson Dart, Chris?"

Rizzo asked his producer for an opinion, and the producer guessed the Steelers. Dart is an intriguing prospect, coming from a Lane Kiffin system that hasn’t consistently proven effective at the next level. However, his performance at the combine has significantly elevated his draft stock.

That’s when Rizzo admitted that he believes the Steelers' quarterback plan for 2025 is to extend Fields and take a massive swing on Dart, no matter how early it takes. Dart entered the draft as a slept-on prospect, but his stock has already soared.

"That's exactly right and they are doing everything they can to not let that out of the bag," Rizzo said. "Don't be surprised if the Steelers keep Justin Fields and draft Jaxson Dart."

If Dart's stock has truly risen, it puts the Steelers in a tough spot. With many roster needs and a weak draft class at quarterback, the idea of selecting one 21st overall in the 2025 NFL Draft feels eerily similar to what went wrong with Kenny Pickett. However, organizations can't let fear dictate their decisions, and Dart is reportedly viewed much higher than Pickett was coming out of college.

It’s interesting to consider what would happen if the Steelers moved forward with Fields, let Wilson walk in free agency, and drafted Dart. The quarterback situation would look far more promising. They’d have two talented, mobile quarterbacks with a ton of potential on their roster. The odds of at least one of them becoming a franchise quarterback would be solid.

The Steelers’ 2025 offseason and draft are set to reshape the franchise for years to come. With no playoff win since the 2016 season, Steeler Nation is growing frustrated by the ongoing drought. Wilson was brought in with hopes that his experience could help end it, but when it mattered most, he couldn't deliver.

Steelers Should Go In A Younger Direction At Quarterback

This failure has led many fans to call for a younger direction at quarterback, with no desire to pay Wilson $30 million for another disappointing season in 2025. The idea of moving forward with a more affordable and promising option like Fields and drafting Dart is gaining some steam.

If the Steelers opt for a younger quarterback, they could build a more dynamic, mobile offense with long-term potential. The 2025 offseason is shaping up to be a turning point for the Steelers, as they look to finally break the playoff drought and rebuild around a new generation of talent. The Steelers simply can't afford to get this offseason wrong.
