Steelers Trading For DK Metcalf Becomes A Real Possibility After Promising New Report

The Pittsburgh Steelers are once again going through an offseason with the desire to upgrade the wide receiver position. For years the organization was able to rely on drafting great talent at the position and it translating to the NFL, but the franchise needs to start to spend on the offensive side of the ball. There are some intriguing free agents available at the position, and Pittsburgh should be active on the trade market with some quality names being shopped. The Steelers are also at a prime position to draft one of the top receivers in the 2025 NFL draft.

If the Steelers want to significantly upgrade the offensive side of the ball, a star wide receiver is needed to complement George Pickens. A player that fits that mold is DK Metcalf, and he requested a trade from the Seattle Seahawks

The organization was initially looking for a pretty high price in exchange for the receiver, as it was asking for a first- and a third-round pick. Thankfully, that price has gone down. NFL insider Dianna Russini reported on Sunday that Seattle would now accept a package built around a second-round selection.

Metcalf is also looking for a new deal upon being traded, which is another factor to consider when trading for any player. He wants roughly $30 million per year, which would likely come across a three or four-year deal. This is a considerable financial commitment, in addition to whatever draft compensation is given up as well.

Russini also reported that Metcalf prefers to play somewhere with warm weather, but that is not going to be a priority for the Seahawks. The organization is going to do whatever gives them the highest return, which is needed as it looks like Seattle might be headed for a rebuild. According to The Athletic, General Manager John Schneider has already said that the organization is going to do what is best for the team first, and then it will think about what Metcalf wants.

"We're interested in doing what’s absolutely best for the organization." Schneider said. "Hopefully both things merge and it is an ideal situation."

As long as the Steelers offer a fair amount of draft compensation for Metcalf, they could get the deal done with Seattle. An extension would also need to be reached before the trade is finalized, and that part could be tricky if Metcalf is set on playing somewhere with a warm climate.

Steelers Could Give Metcalf A Reason To Come To Pittsburgh

The Steelers are still in the middle of figuring out who is going to be the team's starting quarterback during the 2025 season. It seems like the franchise wants to move forward with Justin Fields, but he is expected to have a strong market in free agency. It is very possible that he ends up signing elsewhere, which may force Pittsburgh to look towards Russell Wilson.

If Wilson winds up being the starter for 2025, this may make Metcalf want to come to Pittsburgh. The wide receiver had the best years of his career while playing with Wilson in Seattle, and the two have stayed close although they have not played together in three years. Metcalf caught 29 touchdowns during his three seasons with Wilson, and he has only caught 19 without him. The two have some sort of chemistry that works on the football field, and it could be interesting to see it in Pittsburgh.
